This was the perfect way to travel from Lisbon to Porto. We were in a comfortable sedan with a wonderful driver/guide, Leo Goncalves. Leo is an excellent driver, friendly, caring and full of great information about Portugal and the specific areas we visited. Our first stop, Obidos, is a beautiful medieval town with an impressive fortress. Leo explained the history, made sure we knew our way around and then left us to wander. Perfect! Our next stop was Fatima. It is a beautiful manifestation of Portugal’s Catholic faith. The sanctuary marking the apparition of the Virgin Mary to three young shepherds was beautiful. The basilica is stunning, and the obvious faith of the pilgrims was inspiring. Leo explained the history, the layout of the shrine and, again, allowed us to enjoy it on our own. Our next stop was Alveiro, which was Leo’s recommendation. Leo showed us a lovely restaurant, Solar do Bachalau, for lunch, which was delicious. After lunch, he brought us to a dock for a boat ride on the canals of Alveiro, which is nicknamed “the Venice of Portugal.” We had a lovely day for the boat ride. The final stretch of our trip took us to Porto. We were comfortable dozing in the back seat until we got close to Porto. Leo filled us in on his city’s history and points of interest. All in all, it was a perfect day and a wonderful way to get to Porto. I highly recommend the tour and remember to ask for Leo.
