My guide Nael was one of the best guides I’ve ever had. For me history and culture are the most important thing. Nael was very knowledgeable about not only the destination but also the areas and villages we traveled through. My Indonesian language skills are average so my guide’s knowledge of both languages was essential. He’s also a friendly guy and a great conversationalist. Top marks for his refined taste in playing indie pop and rock.

This was truly a surreal and wonderful experience! We originally had booked for 2D1N to do Bromo and Ijen through Get Your Guide. But the organisers informed us of Ijen’s closure due to wildfires with plenty of notice and offered different alternatives. In the end we opted for the Bromo Sunrise tour and drop off at Ketapang and booked directly with TrippyTrip via WhatsApp. We were collected by Nael from our hotel in Surabaya on the dot at 23:30. He was immediately very warm and welcoming and since he is young and speaks English well, we felt like we were travelling with a buddy! He drove us 2.5 hours to a drop off point near Bromo. We left our luggage in his car and he kept it safe for us while we went to Bromo. Next we were collected by Bbani and a Jeep driver. There was a 40 min drive on the Jeep and this can get very bumpy but it all adds to the sense of adventure. Bbani took us to a cafe for tea/coffee/fried bananas and we waited until closer to sunrise. The area is setup for the sunrise tours so there are plenty of places to use toilets (cost 5k IDR), cafes and renting or buying warm clothes. I was wearing a t-shirt, fleece and wind breaker with cargo trousers and felt very cold for about half an hour before sunrise. Some leggings under the trousers would have helped a lot. When we started walking up to the view point, I warmed up though so all good. But the dust is no joke in the dry season, people. Definitely have a mask. The guide gave us some but I think it was too thin. So something more substantial would be good, think ffp3 masks that we wore during Covid. This is very important if you go to the volcano rim through sea of sands which as the name suggests is very sandy! We were there for sunrise on a Saturday so there was a pretty substantial crowd. Obviously this changes the experience because it’s very different to seeing sunrise alone in a mountain but not necessarily for the worse! There’s a nice sense of collective wonder associated with so many people gathering to see a stunning natural phenomenon. It does mean that you have to be more clever with your photography and wait in an informal queue to have your picture taken by your guide. But we had some nice chats up there too so I didn’t mind the people apart from the one “influencer” type who was hogging the best spot. But we got our turn anyway. Now as for the sunrise itself, nothing could have quite prepared me for how STUNNING it was. Definitely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed in my entire life. The colours are unreal, and the view is enhanced by the clouds rolling in between the volcanic peaks. The scenery changes every few seconds so not a single boring moment! My husband and I agreed that only this one sunrise made the whole trip to Indonesia worth it. I have to give a big shout out to Bbani with his choice of the view point which gave us the best view of the sunrise and the peaks without being too crowded. And he was also on it with making sure we have as many pictures as possible with all the different backgrounds. He took us to the volcano rim too and took pictures there too. But the cherry on top was when he took us to a less busy spot with the jeep, got us to climb the jeep and take some photos with the mountain behind us. These were the pictures that I didn’t know I needed but I am now so glad we’ve got them! They are so adorable and funny at the same time! After this, it was time for a nice breakfast at a nearby hotel with Bbani. Then they took us back to Nael who then drove us 6 hours to Ketapang. This man was still smiling after the 6 hour drive and before he was going to drive back 7 hours to Surabaya. I cannot thank him enough for being such a good sport. Great conversation, comfortable drive, comfort and snack breaks. He also bought our ferry tickets and took us into the port before we parted ways. Before doing Bromo, I was a bit hesitant because everyone does it and I was worried it would be underwhelming and a tourist trap. But I’m so glad we did it. It was absolutely worth it and the price from TrippyTrip was totally worthwhile considering the total worry-free service we got.

We did a one day sunrise tour to Mount Bromo from Surabaya. Let's start with the positive only positive aspect: Vincent via WhatsApp has always been very responsive and comprensive. For the rest, the tour was a nightmare. When you arrive to the village the group is splitted in 3/4 groups to fit in the jeeps. From that point onwards, we were totally left alone from the guide. We were left from the jeep driver along the road, without knowing where to go. We followed other people and after 1.5-2km walking in the dark we arrived to the hill, to ensure seeing the sunset. After the sunrise, we recognised another person of the initial group (which was in another jeep) and he told us that he has been told to meet in a bar with the guide. When we arrived there, we were very surprised to see that the guide did not even remember we were in his group. Lastly, but very important, we were supposed to be back in Surabaya between 12h and 13h, but we arrived much later. We got stressed because we had a flight in the afternoon. When I asked explanation to the guide he said "traffic", but surprisingly we were in a restaurant for 2h, for an unnecessary stop that noone wanted to do (considering that we got picked up at midnight and everyone was already tired). 2 words to describe this tour: chaotic and unprofessional. Do yourself a favour: book the tour with a different company.

We recommend this experience 100%. Our guide, Bima, was super attentive, friendly, and fun. He speaks English very well and answered all our questions. Thanks to him, we enjoyed the experience a lot. We had a great time! Without a doubt, a 100% recommended experience.
