Erica was an exceptional guide. She was very informative to those of us who had never seen the lights. She is a very kind person and was easy to talk to. The lights turned out to be fantastic. A once in a lifetime experience for some of us. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone. 10 out of 10.

Five stars for this experience and guide!
What an awesome experience and our guide CHAD made it even better. Extremely knowledgeable and personable. I felt his passion for the aurora borealis. He took awesome pictures and shared his photography knowledge with us. He was very patient with our photo requests and really took some great photos. I highly recommend this experience. The cloud coverage interfered with our viewing a bit but we were still able to view some significant auroras. Thank you again!!

Lady Aurora Made Us Wait, Then She Danced
Got to see Lady Aurora! A huge thank-you to Alaska Photo Treks, especially the owner and award-winning Alaskan photographer, Carl Johnson.
At first, I was beginning to lose hope. The forecast was 50/50, and we thought the clouds might get in the way. However, the real challenge was that the aurora took a long time to put on a show.
Carl was incredibly patient and explained everything to us throughout the tour. He detected the aurora while it was still very faint, but she became truly visible only during the final part of our trip. We waited from 11 PM until almost 4 AM for that moment.
Lady Aurora wasn’t simply given to us. We had to be patient, but the wait was worth it. She finally revealed herself and even danced for us. It was an unforgettable experience, and I’m very grateful to Carl and Alaska Photo Treks for making it possible.

Aurora nights can be unpredictable, and sometimes the ones that make you wait are the ones you remember most. In a way, that uncertainty is part of what makes seeing the aurora feel so special.

Disappointed
Nothing is guarantee to see the northern light. We were able to get a little bit of the northern lights from tour guide’s camera because of all the cloud cover the sky. $315 per person for seeing nothing is very disappointed. Tour Chad is professional and knowledgeable.

Hi. Thank you for letting us know that our guides did a good job in helping you to enjoy this experience as much as possible. The forecast for the night of your tour indicated that the aurora would be visible (it likely would have been visible if not for the band of low clouds to the north). Unfortunately, forecasts are sometimes wrong. Because of our vigorous standards for when we run this tour, we have a five-year average of our guests seeing the aurora borealis with the naked eye 80% of the time this tour runs. I am sorry that you were among the 20%.
Since you were not able to see the aurora with the naked eye (only in camera), you are eligible for a free makeup tour at any time. Please contact us directly to schedule it. We certainly hope that you take advantage of your makeup tour.

Do This!!
We had a great time learning about and searching for the Northern Lights! Ben was very knowledgeable and helpful. We could tell he wanted us to have a great experience. He went above and beyond to find the perfect spot and conditions for us to see the lights…and we did see them! Thanks, Ben, for helping us accomplish one of the big items on our bucket list!! It was well worth pulling the “all nighter” our first night in Alaska!!

Total Gamble
The photography guides are incredible and clearly know their stuff. For visitors with professional gear, this is an excellent crash course in night photography. If the northern lights show up, I am sure it is an unforgettable experience.
Unfortunately, the lights did not appear during our tour. We ended up sitting in the cold for hours just taking standard night shots.
A major warning: if you do not have a professional camera, this tour is not for you. Without pro gear, you will leave with zero good photos on your phone.
I understand they cannot control nature, but paying this much money to sit in the freezing dark feels like a massive gamble. It essentially turned into a glorified, expensive night taxi driven by a very knowledgeable photographer

We appreciate that you were willing to brave the colder temperatures during the tour. Just so everyone who reads this knows, we provide complimentary parkas, blankets, and handwarmers/toewarmers during the tour. Additionally, there is a van that is running nearby with the heater for those who wish to go inside and warm up.
While in general you can do more with nighttime photography with a DSLR or mirrorless camera ("professional" cameras are not required), you can still do plenty with a smartphone. In the right conditions, smartphones can also photograph the Milky Way and other night sky phenomena.
As you know, because you were not able to see the aurora during the tour, you will be able to participate in a free make-up tour at any time in the future. Please contact us directly to schedule that. We certainly hope that you take advantage of that.

Amazing!
We had an amazing time on this tour. We received info before leaving saying the conditions weren’t optimal and we were given the choice to cancel. We decided to go ahead and were so glad we did. Our tour guide, Erica was amazing. Incredibly knowledgeable and knew right where to take us when the sky finally cleared up enough to see. She took some incredible pictures to share with us and coached us on how to take our own. So thankful we got to see the northern lights, but feel confident it would have been worth it without the sky clearing up given the amount of knowledge gained from Erica. Excellent experience.

Enchanted night 🤩
Enchanted night 🤩 I don’t think I’ll ever have the words to describe the beauty of the Aurora Borealis, but I will say it made me cry twice. 🥹 It was the experience of a lifetime! Colin was our tour guide and he was THE BEST!! You can tell he loves what he does. He did a great job at capturing portraits of us as well as teaching us about how and when to view the Aurora Borealis. The trip in total lasted about 6 hours. (which I thought was perfect!) The group was small, just us three and Colin. However, the energy was electric. Colin made sure we were all safe and warm (hand warmers were provided and the tour van was kept warm during our stops in case we needed to warm up a bit). He also provided hot apple cider, hot cocoa and snacks. We made multiple stops during the 6 hours. It truly was a thrilling experience! 1,000,000/10 recommend 🤩🌌💛🥹
