Our driver spoke no English despite “basic English” being a clearly detailed in the Company’s marketing material. The driver relied upon Google Translate for all communication. He indicated on leaving the Melia Hotel in Dong Hoi that the trip would take 6 hours. We had no idea where we were headed when we took a diversion - for example the side trip to Vinh Moc took over an hour and a half. Four hours into the trip we were less than a third of the way to Hoi An. When questioned on this lack of progress the driver still indicated we would be in Hoi An in two hours. We took a secondary road for no apparent reason that added an hour to our trip. Recognizing that the journey would take significantly longer longer than six hours we asked the driver to get us to Hoi A the quickest and safest possible. Shortly after this request he turned off the highway onto a secondary road once again. We asked why we were going this way as our Google Maps was clearly indicating this route would take an extra hour. Only after consulting a dispatcher by phone did he return to the more direct route. Next, despite there being a bypass of Da Nang, the driver proceeded to enter downtown Da Nang at rush hour. This added another hour to the journey - why? The trip took 8 hours and 15 minutes, and would have been at least an hour or two longer if we hadn’t insisted on the driver taking a direct route - which was largely ignored! Elements of this could have been avoided if our driver had, as represented in the Company’s marketing information, spoke “basic English” Very disappointing experience, especially considering we could have taken a bus for 1/10th of the Cdn$280 price!
