It was supposed to be a park for snorkeling. That’s what the billboards show. Everything was dead in the water when we snorkeled. No vibrant plant or animal life whatsoever. The water was full of sunscreen and the chemicals from it. You could see it. The water was literally greasy, unclear under the surface. Almost no fish and we swam through the entire park and mangrove river looking for them. We only found a few clusters of fish. Xel-Ha is already expensive and the regular ticket doesn’t include a lot of the “worth it” activities, like swimming with dolphins or sting rays. The sting rays and dolphins are the only authentic part of the park with true sea life. That’s what we thought. Everything has died. There’s really not much else! If you’re looking for ocean life or great snorkeling experiences, go somewhere else! Do not go to Xel-Ha. Also, the manatee exhibit was closed off to tourists when we went because of construction or something. And the water slide was slow. The food was average. I know it sounds like I’m being a hater but I really don’t want a family to waste $500-700 on a vacation day there when it is truly not worth it. The Yucatan peninsula has so many other options. If you are already on your way, if you are driving, please stop in Akumal before you get to Xel-Ha for a real snorkeling experience. The reef is exploding with abundance. You will save time, money, and life. We stopped in Akumal after our day at Xel-Ha because we were so disappointed and sad. We were SO sad. My local boyfriend went to Xel-Ha 10 years ago and at that time, the water was full of flourishing life and hundreds of fish. But not anymore. It’s really sad to see what’s happened to the ecosystem there now. Xel-Ha is killing their office. They are killing what puts the food on their tables. I hope they can find a way to fix it
While Xel-Há is a beautiful park, our experience was negatively impacted by poor customer service and inconsistent information. First, an employee named Sharon at check-in window one was un profesional. She clearly knew I was next in line, yet repeatedly allowed locals and others to go ahead of me. I politely but firmly pointed out that she was aware I had been waiting, but she completely ignored my concerns. It was frustrating and disrespectful. Second, there seemed to be confusion regarding restaurant hours throughout the park. It felt as though some locations were effectively closing service about 30 minutes before the posted time, which created unnecessary confusion for guests trying to plan their meals. The most frustrating example was when a park employee at the Information center directed us to La Parrilla Restaurant because we were specifically looking for a steak option. After making the trip there, we were told they were closed at 4:30 PM even though the posted closing time was 5:00 PM. When I questioned this, the explanation changed to, “We’re open, but we only have snacks and no meat available.” Had they simply been honest from the beginning, we could have saved time and gone elsewhere. Xel-Há has many wonderful attractions, but better staff training, clearer communication, and respect for guests’ time would greatly improve the overall experience.

The food was excellent, the activities are always varied, the restaurant service is among the best. Personally, we went for some snacks to the terrace and were attended by José Alberto, who was always attentive and very quick.

Xel Ha has the best of the Xcaret group: an inclusive park where its staff is so diverse that it is worth highlighting the hiring of Maya-speaking people who communicate among themselves and switch to Spanish or English without any problem. It has the best restaurant: the Mexican one. I greatly appreciate the tone of voice of ALL its staff being kind, attentive, and very willing to help. Thank you for making us feel at home and especially welcome. You are the best, and I say this with firsthand knowledge.
