There are many historic and beautiful shines and temples tucked between skyscrapers in the Toranomon and Daimon areas of Tokyo. Our guide, Akira, introduced us to these sacred spaces and made them come alive as he explained the history of the area and the development of its Shinto and Buddhist heritage. Our walking tour was well paced, and Akira had obviously selected and sequenced the tour stops with Care so that they reinforced the history he was presenting. We learned about the roots of Shintoism in Japan and how it is practiced today. We also learned about how Buddhism was introduced and became interwoven with Shintoism, and how all of this was influenced by the move from an imperial government to a Shoganate, and back again. Akira was attentive to our energy levels and very interested in our questions. This is a small group experience, and we were the only two guests on the day of our tour. This made it even easier to learn a great deal as we discovered unexpected beauty and historic sacred spaces in this hyper modern city.
