My husband and I took this tour recently while we were lucky enough to be undertaking a one month trip around the Balkans. Out of all our plans and scheduled excursions, this was the one we were most excited for and it exceeded our high expectations. Anyone familiar with looking at Viator or GetYourGuide knows the feelings of scrolling through hundreds of variations of the same experiences. This tour immediately jumped out as a unique opportunity. As a history teacher, I had a very vague awareness of the Roma people, but many of the sources I have seen have been colored by prejudice and ignorance. Having the opportunity to walk through a vibrant neighborhood characterized by a strong sense of community gave us a much better sense of the history of the Roma people and the richness of their culture. The tour was planned and led impeccably. The groups are small and designed to allow people to visit in a respectful way. The passion that Vojislav has for the local Roma community and for helping dispel some of the negative ideas that have permeated society is apparent. He clearly has strong connections within the community that wouldn’t be possible with a guide from some generic tour company. The coffee was incredible and the burek was absolutely mind blowing. We are so grateful to Vojislav for creating such a unique opportunity and for sharing it with us. In my mind, this is what travel is all about: learning about others, dispelling false narratives, and taking some of the valuable lessons you learn back home. This experience will stay with me long after we get home and unpack our bags.
