Very interesting and impressive and knowledgable guide
This tour was a highlight of our Italy visit. It was amazing to see the quarries and learn about the process. It is a spectacular site to see. We’re so glad we took this tour.
We paid for a private Carrara marble tour for our family of six. The quarry experience was the primary reason we booked this tour, and unfortunately it was one of the biggest disappointments of our entire Italy trip. The quarry visit lasted less than five minutes. We parked on the side of the road, walked approximately 20 feet off the road, looked at the marble mountain hundreds of feet away, took a couple of photos, listened to a brief explanation, and left. We never entered a quarry, visited an active quarry, or explored the quarry area in any meaningful way. Before booking, I had researched several Carrara tour operators. Many of them take guests into the quarries by 4x4, stop at multiple quarry locations, and provide a much more immersive experience. That is the type of experience I believed we were paying for. Instead, our quarry stop was essentially a brief roadside stop. The "museum" was not what I expected either. It was an outdoor display with historical photographs, informational signs, and a few pieces of old equipment. It was interesting to read, but it was not a traditional museum experience and did not justify the cost of a private guided tour. The lardo tasting was simply one piece of bread with one slice of lardo that was a free sample from a shop. We did not have an opportunity to walk around Colonnata or experience the village. As soon as we finished eating the 1 free sample, we were asked to get back into the local bus and continue. We had expected an in-depth private quarry experience and instead felt like we wasted a lot of time in the store and museum and then we were being moved quickly from the rest of the tour. Nicola is knowledgeable and friendly, but knowledge alone did not make this a good value. For 800, we expected a genuine Carrara quarry experience. Instead, the actual quarry portion lasted only a few minutes and never went beyond the roadside. If your goal is to truly experience the Carrara marble quarries, I would recommend looking carefully at operators that include actual quarry access or dedicated 4x4 quarry tours. Based on our experience, this tour did not provide the level of access or immersion that we expected.
Hi Jill, I’m very sorry to read about this, I wish you had voiced your dissatisfaction at any time during the 3 hours long private tour so that we could have properly refunded you and not accepted the generous tip your husband left us which made us confident we delivered the same level of quality and in depth tour as described on all our other (99%) reviews. Everything went exactly how it was described in the numerous emails we exchanged, including the final stop inside an actual quarry were you had the chance to touch real marble blocks and take great photos next to the machineries and equipments, the only thing which I agree was missing is the 4x4 vehicle ride, neither mentioned in our description nor offered to you during our previous communications. Reading your other reviews here on Trip Advisor I noticed you are always complaining about a service not up to your expectations so I think the most plausible explanation is you are having difficulties comprehending what you are actually paying for. To avoid your future frustrations and unfair reviews to serious businesses I suggest you carefully read the description of a tour before booking it. Regards
Everything is great A must-do for everyone
Nicola the guide was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Very detailed explanations and answered all our questions. To arrive to the meeting point a car is required and the road trip is also beautiful.
Nicola was a wonderful guide! As a trained geologist, he was clear and informative in explaining every aspect of how marble is formed, excavated and used. We left our tour with a deeper understanding and appreciation of Carrara marble and its history -- we highly recommend!
First rate experience! Nicola, a geologist by training, lead a very informative and enjoyable tour of the Carrara marble culture and industry. Length of tour perfect. Great speaker. Very passionate.
Absolutely incredible experience. Nikola was extremely knowledgeable about everything he showed us and answered all the questions we had. Super cool to see and experience the actual quarries and learn about the history of them. Highly recommend the tour and tour guide, Nikola.
Great tour guide. Very knowledgeable. Would definitely recommend this tour. Learned a lot of interesting facts. Beautiful area.
Excellent guide! Very knowledgeable about everything that affected careers over time. Has been without problem able to answer fairly technical questions. The visit to the village to taste the lardo is brief (this village is very small though). Don't hesitate to try it, it's surprisingly tasty!
