A disjointed exhibition. 1 small wall with posters from the past 30 years.
There are almost no exhibits. Empty, very political. Only conceptual and repetitive photographs and videos. Very poor for being the modern art museum of Barcelona. Please do not buy a ticket! And definitely do not go with children. They have nothing to do there.
I don’t particularly love modern art, but there is often something to love since postmodernism appreciates utility as the only remaining value—furniture in particular. This museum doesn’t really have any pieces I would call utility, it is pretty devoid of what Martin Buber would call an “I-thou” piece: one that invites the patron to enter into a relationship involving the whole being of the subject. In my view, art that is facilitative of such a relationship is deeply embedded in the real world: it honors real human relationship, nature, place. The pieces here are of two types: political and disembodied. The only two emotions i think this museum wanted to curate in its patrons is either anger or an unsettled feeling. There is little attempt to connect with the artist “in-between,” and there is a tremendous amount of nudity for no real purpose or reason. Like the Sagrada Família, this museum is less than the sum of its parts. It is not moving. It does not connect the viewer with a greater sense of humanity. Like most modern art it only attempts to shock in extremes, which it also unfortunately fails at. Nudity and alien like figures is not subversive and in any person living today in such a cultural city like Barcelona it is mundane and boring. I also find it honestly abhorrent when museums charge full price like this, despite the fact that 1/3 of its floors was offline for an installation. This is not a world class modern art museum. I would say my favorite modern art museum in the world is the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, which likely does a tremendous amount more with much less. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.
A superb building. Original, surprising exhibitions on 3 levels.
Opened in 1995, it is a modern white building with stained glass windows by American architect Meier and is the most important contemporary art hub in the city. There are more than 5500 works on several levels that are exhibited in rotation during the year, as well as interesting periodic exhibitions, while the museum also has a small cafeteria and bookshop. The works, which are mostly from 1920 to the present day, include photography, graffiti, painting, sculpture, drawing and collages with particular attention to Catalan and Spanish artists (Tapie, Barcelò, Chillida, etc.), but also of international importance, such as Cage, Calder, Nauman, Basquiat and Klee. In front of Placa dels Angels you will notice many skaters, because this space is considered one of the most beautiful in Europe for fans and the museum itself has contributed to the recovery of an area of the neighborhood once run down and now returned to new life. I would say a modern and very interesting museum especially for lovers of this kind of art.
The museum as a building (Richard Meier) is architecturally a masterpiece. The exhibition itself disappointed me: Too much politics, too little art! My 2 cents to that....
On a day trip to Barcelona, we dropped into the gallery on a whim and really enjoyed the challenging nature of the Carlos Motta exhibition. Museum staff all v friendly and the building itself is beautiful. If in the area again, would like to spend longer there. If you are interested in modern art, including film, photography and sculpture, then do visit.
The Museo is very beautiful and had cool exhibitions, I liked it but didn't like it. As I was already in the region, it was worth going, but I would not say that it is something unavoidable, it is more for those who like contemporary art.
Definitely explicit gay artist installations! You are greeted by the photo of a naked man kneeling seen from behind that leaves no room for imagination! The rest all on this line! Children and teenagers also go, I find it really indecent not to write it before entering!!!! A shame!!!!
