We do appreciate all feedback, as it helps us continually review how we communicate and deliver the experience, and there are a couple of points we would like to clarify for future travellers reading your review. We’re sorry to hear that you were under the impression the Safari was only around 30 minutes from Denarau. Denarau is over 66km from Sigatoka, the town from which Sigatoka River Safari derives its name. Under normal conditions, even without traffic, road delays or additional passenger pickups, the journey is approximately 1 hour 5 minutes at minimum. We’re therefore unsure where the 30-minute expectation originated, as this is not a travel time we would provide for Denarau to Sigatoka. Our Denarau pickups commence from approximately 7:00am, depending on the resort, with guests typically arriving at our Sigatoka Town headquarters before 8:30am. The Safari then departs Sigatoka at 8:45am. The approximately 30-minute journey from Sigatoka Town into the Sigatoka Valley is actually part of the Safari experience, rather than simply another transfer. Along the way, our guides share information about Fiji, the valley, its people and village life, while pointing out places of interest before reaching our jet boat departure point. Naturally, guests staying in Denarau will have a considerably longer journey to and from Sigatoka than those staying on the Coral Coast, simply due to the distance involved. We welcome all feedback as an opportunity to identify and refine any perceived weaknesses in the guest experience. In this instance, however, the distance between Denarau and Sigatoka is ultimately a geographical one and therefore something we obviously cannot change. What we can continue to do is ensure the location and transfer arrangements are communicated as clearly as possible. We would also like to clarify your reference to a “tribute” for the village. There is absolutely no requirement or expectation for guests to bring a gift or make a donation. During our briefing, we explain that some guests choose to bring gifts, and if they have done so, they should let their captain know so they can assist with the appropriate traditional presentation. The choice to give is left entirely to the individual. Simply by joining the Sigatoka River Safari, you are already contributing to our longstanding partnerships with the village communities. We are genuinely sorry that your initial assumption about our proximity to Denarau affected your expectations of the day. At the same time, we greatly appreciate that once you were on Safari, you enjoyed the jet boating, traditional ceremony, food and singing, and particularly the time spent with your new friends in the village. That genuine connection with the people of the Sigatoka Valley is ultimately what we hope our guests remember long after the journey home. Bula Rebecca, What a fantastic account of the whole Sigatoka River Safari experience, and I had to smile at the mention of the owner doing your hotel pickup — occasionally I still get let loose behind the wheel! We’re really pleased you appreciated all the little details along the way, from the smooth pickup and welcome in Sigatoka to the complimentary sulu for the ladies, bottled water and the stories shared as you travelled deeper into the Sigatoka Valley. Then it was over to Fabulous Freddie! The journey upriver is such a wonderful window into everyday life—children swimming and playing, families washing in the river, farmers working nearby, animals along the banks and plenty of enthusiastic waves as the jet boat passes. It’s Fiji simply going about its day. But we especially loved that the village visit was your highlight. That really is the heart of the Sigatoka River Safari. Our partner villages are genuine living communities, and being welcomed in to share the traditional ceremony, kava, a home-cooked lunch and time with the families and children provides an opportunity to experience Fiji well beyond the resorts. Children have an incredible ability to recognise genuine happiness and warmth. Our partner villages aren’t staged tourist attractions—they are real communities generously opening their homes and sharing their food, culture and way of life with our guests. When young visitors form that connection and find it difficult to say goodbye, it reminds us why the village experience is truly the heart of what we do. We also really appreciate you mentioning the organisation behind the day—from punctual transfers and clearly explained costs through to manageable group sizes, safety and genuine care for our guests. Bula Kath, We love reviews like this—sometimes the best experiences are the ones you know absolutely nothing about before you arrive! To hear that it turned into "the best tour you’ve been on" is a tremendous compliment. Captain Hot Laps will certainly appreciate the mention. He actually grew up in the Sigatoka Valley, so this really is his backyard. The river, villages and people you meet along the journey are part of the community he knows so well, which makes the stories and connections he shares particularly genuine. Just one small clarification around the villages: there are 52 villages from the top to the bottom of the Sigatoka River system and surrounding area, but Sigatoka River Safari works in partnership with 18 villages, which we visit on a rotational basis. This allows the benefits of tourism to be shared amongst our partner communities while keeping the experience genuine and sustainable. It sounds like your village certainly turned on the Fijian hospitality—from the kava ceremony and walk through the community to that beautiful home-cooked lunch and, eventually, everyone getting up for a dance! We’re also really pleased you mentioned feeling safe throughout the experience. Fun and excitement are obviously a huge part of the jet boat ride—and those 360s certainly generate plenty of laughing and screaming—but the safety and care of our guests always comes first.
