This was an absolutely delightful afternoon. I feel like I made a new lifelong friend in Ash! The food was delicious, but the history, the Maori cultural elements, the sense of the choice people made and continue to make to be part of the city of Christchurch, that was the magic and gift of the tour. The food stops were amazing and they all came with great stories - the bakery, hand pies, chocolates, gelato - my tummy is still full. More than that, I learned about how the community collectively designed the city post earthquake. The care, intentionality, and commitment to community are highly evident. Ash also took me to an important landmark that celebrates the women's suffrage movement in the 19th century here in New Zealand. Highly, highly recommend!
Ash was our tour guide and she was the most lovely and interesting guide I would have asked for! The food was fabulous and it was the best way to experience the city with a local. 10/10!!
Absolute must do. Ash was amazing. Really enjoyable day!! So early in your trip so you know where all the great eateries are.
Highly recommended!!! Run by a family business (Maori) so you learn a lot about the culture, but also about Christchurch itself. The places you are taken to are top notch and everything is focused on supporting the local community. A real addition to your visit to Christchurch.
We are not doing a lot of food tours, but usually they have been a lot of fun, about food specialties of the town and other information about the destination. This was more like a paid lunch with strangers (nice ones), but not worth the time and money. Sorry, the guide is a nice guy, but it is just not done how it should be done, at least not in my opinion.
Kia ora Rolf, Ngā mihi — thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Kai Bites is crafted as a cultural experience: a moment to connect with a local Māori host, hear the stories of our people and place, and enjoy kai that reflects our values of connection and hospitality. On the day of your tour, the city experienced an influx of visitors for a major annual event, so the experience was slightly modified to ensure an enjoyable and timely journey for guests. We are pleased to hear you found Riwai to be a nice guy, and we’re sorry our style wasn’t quite what you were hoping for. We appreciate you joining us and sharing your perspective as we continue to refine how we describe the experience, and will use your feedback for ongoing training and improvements. Ngā mihi
This morning we took a fascinating tour of Christchurch — and came away with a much deeper understanding of how this city has rebuilt itself, both structurally and culturally, since the devastating 2011 earthquake that destroyed 85% of it. What made the tour truly special was that it was led by Amaki Tours, a Māori-owned company. One of the owners, Ashley, guided our small group herself, and her perspective as an indigenous person added a dimension we simply wouldn’t have gotten anywhere else. The initiative to rebuild the city was grounded in 100 days of input from affected residents, with the plans ultimately adopting much of what the community suggested — centering culture, community, and accessibility at the heart of the new Christchurch. Since the earthquake, a new Christchurch has emerged — one that’s actively working to dismantle the “us vs. them” dynamic that defined so much of the city’s past. Hearing that story told through a Māori lens made it all the more powerful. Highly recommend Amaki Tours to anyone visiting Christchurch. 🌿
Ngā mihi nui for taking the time to share this thoughtful reflection. It truly means a lot to us to hear how the tour resonated with you. Sharing Ōtaurahi. Christchurch’s story through a Māori lens — and honouring both the pain and the resilience that shaped the city — is at the heart of why we do what we do. We’re especially grateful you joined us and connected with the kaupapa of community-led rebuilding, culture, and accessibility. Thank you for your generous recommendation, and for walking alongside us in this story of place, people, and renew
Wow Ash our amazing tour guide was a lovely person and you couldn’t help but warm to her instantly and even more so as you got to know her heritage and all about what Christchurch has to offer. If you want good food but also a lovely paced cultural experience then this is the tour for you. Thoroughly enjoyed this and was a perfect way to spend our last day in Christchurch. Thank you Ash xx
Kia ora Sharon Thank you so much for your lovely words. We’re delighted to hear that Ash made you feel so welcome — she has a special way of sharing her whakapapa, her stories, and her love for Ōtautahi in a way that brings people in straight away. Our tours are designed as gently paced cultural experiences, where good kai, local insights, and meaningful connection come together. It’s wonderful to hear it was a memorable way to spend your final day in Christchurch. Ngā mihi nui for choosing to spend that time with us, and for acknowledging Ash in such a heartfelt way.
This was an excellent food walking tour of Christchurch The host was amazing and i Learnt so much about the city i didnot Know already I have done many around the world
This was so much fun! Ash was the best tour guide. She took us to amazing places where we had delicious food and samples. Ash is also very knowledgeable about Christchurch and its history. My husband and I were sad when this tour was over as we had so much fun with Ash. Our hearts and bellies were very content.
I joined this food walking tour in Christchurch today and had a really lovely experience. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, which made it easy to enjoy both the food and the conversations along the way. Our guide was excellent — very knowledgeable and engaging. She shared in-depth insights about Māori history and culture, which added an important and meaningful layer to the tour beyond just the food. It made the experience feel much richer and more connected to the place. For other travelers, I’d say this tour is perfect if you want more than just tastings. It’s a great way to learn about Christchurch’s history and culture while enjoying local food in a relaxed small-group setting. I would definitely recommend it. Thank you so much, Asch!!
