Very in depth tour of the Vatican Museum

Very knowledgeable and in depth tour of the Vatican museum. Tour guide had almost too much information. The collection is vast and it takes a while to go through every room with guide explaining the different artwork. Children and teenagers would maybe not be interested. Does include the Sistine Chapel. We went on a Wednesday afternoon and by that time St Peter’s Basilica was open, which was amazing. Make sure you see this. It may indicate that it is closed Wednesdays, as there is a papal audience in the morning. By 1:30 on the day we went, the Basilica was open.

Tour Guide Simone

This tour sucked. I understand that the Vatican is an extremely busy tourist destination, but this company was unbelievably disorganized and the entire experience was chaotic. When we arrived, we spent a good 10 minutes standing around like idiots with absolutely no information about what was happening. Eventually we were handed the audio earpieces and told to wait until the rest of the group arrived. Then we met our tour guide, Simone. Right from the start, he was incredibly difficult to hear, even with the volume on the earpiece turned all the way up. To make matters worse, he had a habit of mumbling and practically chewing on his words, so even when you could hear him, you couldn't understand him. At one point, most of us had taken our earpieces out because it honestly just sounded like someone making gibberish noises into a microphone. The earpieces themselves were also awful. They constantly fell out and were impossible to keep in. Just a terrible system all around. The absolute worst part of the tour, however, was went we spent TWENTY MINUTES standing in front of a screen while Simone explained tiny details of the paintings in the Sistine Chapel. I felt like I was back in university listening to the world's most boring lecturer somehow make one of the greatest artistic masterpieces in history feel like a mandatory 8 a.m. class. Let me reiterate: we spent ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS to watch a man explain the Sistine Chapel by pointing at pictures of it on a giant tablet. I foolishly thought the rest of the tour was going to be better but it wasn't. There was absolutely no structure. We wandered around aimlessly while listening to a guide we couldn't understand. Instead of highlighting the incredible sculptures, artwork, and history around us, we seemed to spend an absurd amount of time looking at rugs. If I had known I was paying $1,000 to follow a random man around while he rushed past the things people had actually come to see, I would've stayed home and watched paint dry. It would've been more engaging. What made it even worse was Simone's attitude. He was snappy, impatient, and frankly rude. One woman in our group wanted to stop and take pictures, which should not be a controversial thing to do at one of the most famous places on Earth. Because Simone never stopped long enough for anyone to actually enjoy what we were looking at, everyone had to frantically snap photos while walking. She'd occasionally step a few feet away to get a better angle, and once Simone learned her name, it became his favourite word. "Julia! Where are you going, Julia?" "Julia!" "Julia!" Over and over again. I actually heard her quietly say, "Why does he keep calling my name? I'm not doing anything wrong." She wasn't. None of us were. Apparently the expectation was that we stand perfectly still while he was talking, then follow him around like obedient puppies whenever he wanted. At one point, my wife simply walked to the other side of a small roped-off mosaic so she could see better. She was still paying attention and was literally only a few feet away. Simone immediately scolded her and told her to stay with the group. She hadn't wandered off, she had just moved to the other side of a circle. It was bizarre. The man had serious control issues. The most impressive thing Simone accomplished that day was turning a place my family had been excited to visit for years into somewhere we couldn't wait to leave. Then came the end of the tour. Simone told us we were finally free to explore on our own. Almost everyone immediately left. Only one family of four stayed behind. Here's the unbelievable part. My family and I are Filipino. The family of four that stayed behind was also Filipino. Simone apparently decided that because we were the same race, we must all be together. We weren't. So when we started walking away, after already returning our earpieces, he actually got upset with us for "leaving the group." I'll let you draw your own conclusions as to why he assumed we were all together. If I had to do this tour again, I'd rather cut all the grass on my lawn with beard scissors. At least I'd have something to show for my time. This tour was an enormous waste of money, and I'm genuinely disappointed that my family spent over $1,000 on an experience that managed to make one of the most incredible places in the world feel boring.

Vatican,St Peters and Sistine chapel tour

Matteo our guide was brilliant he managed to tell and show us so much in a short time. He kept us moving without losing us and kept it all very interesting and at times very funny. Would highly recommend doing this visit with a guide as there’s so much background and history that they can share as well as pointing out the most relevant aspects.

Enthusiastic and a Weath of knowledge!

Our guide Francesco was so enthusiastic and a wealth of knowledge. He made the tour so enjoyable. The tour was the right length of time. If we had added any of the highlights in the paintings section of the museum, although certainly interesting, the tour would have been too long. So it was just right (especially for the sweltering hot day we were there.

Barbara was a wonderful guide

Barbara was a very knowledgeable and interesting storyteller. It was a very hot and crowded day, but she did a great job of keeping us moving and informed. There was a disrespectful family on the tour and she was kind but firm about their need to stay with the group.
