Only in a tour can you easily visit Uyuni. Tour operators abound and their itineraries are very similar. Even on the multi-day tours, only the first day s spent actually on the salt flats. But what a day that is! 🚂 The early morning start first takes you to the Train Cemetery, Uyuni-Cementerio de Trenes. This is quite a unique attraction and demonstrates the extensive efforts taken in the past to get the salt harvested from Uyuni to the Pacific coast. 🥗 Most tours seem to stop at the small town of Colchani for lunch. You can shop for last minute essentials here if yo need to (in my case sunglasses for the harsh brightness of the salt flats), and buy your less essential souvenirs made of local salt. 🏳️‍🌈 Next stop will be Plaza de las Banderas Uyuni. The old hotel here is now a museum and not very interesting. More photogenic is the platform with global flags. 🌵Isla Incahuasi, a holy spot for ancient Andean cultures, is the next main stop. This oasis of life is fascinating, and so are the elevated views over the salt flat. But it can be tiresome to walk here because of the altitude. 🚙 On the way you feel the expansive size of Uyuni when you get driven over the salt flats for hours at 80 kpm. And when you get off the car you’re surrounded by nothing but flat salt, with the mountains far in the distance. 🌅 Sunset is especially beautiful and feels very pure in this dry landscape where nothing casts a shadow but yourself.

What a lovely experience. It was a delight to the senses. The body and mind adapted in such a way that this journey through deserts, extreme temperatures never experienced, unimaginable landscapes between rocks and desert roads let us transit through nature never imagined, volcanoes, lagoons, flame pink gos, from sunrise to sunset. Feeling the energy of nature at its highest degree is a source of admiration for the Creator of the universe. Thanks to Joex Travel for designing this beautiful plan to let us know that there are hidden places in South America worth visiting. The guides especially Abraham, made this trip worth remembering. Uyuni was not an easy trip. The border overland lengthens, tires, seems never to end. Add to that the height (more than 4,000 meters along the way) that forces you to go slower, to listen to the body. When we arrive, time seems to slow down; and not from nostalgia, but from contrast. It's a backward journey that makes you uncomfortable, but it also raises awareness, forces you to look at other life forms and other emergencies. More than a tourist destination, Uyuni is a journey of unexpected and tiredness, sustained by the warmth of people always willing to help.

The Salar de Uyuni is an amazing natural wonder. Despite having travelled in the dry season, its vastness, the views in the middle of nowhere, the sunset and sunrise and contemplating it in the middle of the night are experiences that can hardly be replicated in another part of the world. I leave completely satisfied with the lived experience, and if I have the opportunity to return I will do so without any doubt.

The tour to the Salar de Uyuni with sunset is an unparalleled experience. The place is incredibly photogenic and the colors of the sky reflected in the salt flat seem unreal. The guide was very attentive, always willing to answer questions and help us with the best perspectives to take photos. I advise wearing comfortable shoes, enough water and something to cover the cold, because when the sun goes down the temperature drops a lot.

You can enjoy the view just like you see in the commercials. The view during the day and in the evening is completely different, so you can enjoy it from daytime to evening. The lake is so big that you drive on the surface of the lake, but you can't see the edge. If you want to take photos of the scenery reflected in the water, the weather will also affect the results, so I think the time of year to go is important. It's really moving.
