パンダヴァ洞窟は、マハーバリプラムで最大の洞窟寺院です。洞窟は、6 本の柱と 2 本のピラスターで支えられています。建築のハイライトは、柱にあるヤリと呼ばれる神話上の生き物の見事な彫刻です。
次の停留所は、クリシュナのバターボール、石造りの斜面に立つ花崗岩の岩です。この不思議な岩はニュートンの重力の法則に反するようで、1000年以上も斜面上のこの不安定な位置にいたにもかかわらず1インチも移動していません。
ヴァラハ洞窟は、巨大な花崗岩を切り出して造られたもので、その歴史は 7 世紀にさかのぼります。この寺院は完成するのに数十年かかりました。ホールを支える柱を飾るしゃがむライオンがあります。もう 1 つのハイライトは、聖域を守る 2 つの守護天使の彫刻です。
この洞窟は、パラヴァ家の壮大な建築様式の好例です。岩を削った寺院は、ヒンズー教の三神、ブラフマー、ヴィシュヌ、シヴァに捧げられています。象の彫刻もあります。
これは、一枚の石から彫られた印象的な戦車です。もともとはシヴァ神に捧げられていましたが、現在は彼の息子であるガネーシャ神が祀られています。 7 世紀にマヘンドラヴァルマン 1 世によって建てられました。この寺院のもう 1 つの見所は、サンスクリット語の古代グランタ文字とナガリ文字による 18 の碑文です。
640 年に建てられたインド最古の灯台であり、世界で最も古い灯台の 1 つです。マハーバリプラムは 7 世紀以来、非常に忙しい港でした。そのため、この灯台は船員の安全を守る上で重要な役割を果たしました。
この洞窟には、マハーバリプラムの最も印象的な芸術作品が 2 つあります。壁には印象的なレリーフが 2 つあります。最初のものは、蛇のとぐろの上で眠っている主ヴィシュヌです。もう1つは、ライオンに乗って悪魔マヒシャースラと戦う女神ドゥルガーです。
最後の寄港地はショアテンプルです。壮大な寺院はベンガル湾を見下ろし、マハーバリプラムが王国の主要な港であったパラヴァの治世中に重要な中心地でした。 8 世紀初頭にラジャ シマ王によって建てられたショア テンプルは、インドの建築景観のランドマークです。マルコ・ポーロはこれを七つの仏塔と呼んだ。現在の寺院は、かつて船乗りの標識として立っていた 7 つの寺院のうち、最後に残ったものです。

Informative and helpful guide. Loved the experience
It was an amazing and truly memorable experience! Our guide and driver took excellent care of us throughout the entire journey, ensuring we were comfortable, safe, and well looked after every step of the way. Their professionalism, friendliness, and attention to detail made the trip even more enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone looking for a wonderful travel experience!
Just back from an incredible trip to Mahabalipuram. A definite must go!!! Kannan was our guide who was exceptionally knowledgeable. Finished with a beautiful thali South Indian lunch which was an experience in itself. 5 stars all the way!
We had a good experience on this tour. It was very interesting, and the guides explained everything clearly and professionally. We felt well looked after throughout the day, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We also had the chance to try some traditional local food, which was nice and gave us a taste of the local culture. Overall, the tour was well organized and enjoyable. It was a worthwhile experience, and we would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about the area and its traditions.
The tour was really interesting showcasing all types of architecture. Our guide Kannan was very friendly and offered us greatly detailed explanations on all sights.

My husband and I visited this wonderful site on 23/04/26 and we loved it. Mahabalipuram extends over different areas: in the first area we visited there are buildings carved in monoliths, in another there are carved caves and relief sculptures, then there is the Butter Ball of Krishna, a huge rock balancing on a hill, and finally the temple a few steps from the beach (hope I haven't forgotten something!) All the sites are beautiful and suggestive, we were lucky enough to find them almost deserted and with a perfect outdoor temperature.
The trip started with a punctual pick up with an experienced driver and knowledgeable guide, Kannan. He provided us with a detailed history of Mahabalipuram during the day. The visit was flexible and adjusted according to our requests. We had a great lunch at a local restaurant which we got to experience both South and North Indian food. Kannan also recommended us a few other locations to visit at our own leisure which were also great to see. Thank you Kanan for making our journey comfortable and memorable.
