Allie was an excellent host and the small group of 4 of us really hit it off, though we were from varied parts of the US. The history and story telling was great and the food and wine were awesome!
Michael, so glad Ally and your group of 4 hit it off despite coming from all over the US! She loves bringing the market's history to life, and it sounds like the food and wine sealed the deal. Thank you for joining us on the Victor Hugo Market Tour - hope you're back in Toulouse again soon. - Jessica
Tania our tour guide was so enthusiastic and accommodating everyone in the group. She provided us with a voluminous assortment of food samples. We even got wine with our cheese sampling. I highly recommend this tour and Tania.
Dennis, that 'voluminous assortment' line made me smile - Tania does love making sure no one leaves hungry! The wine and cheese is always a highlight too. Thank you for such a generous review and for recommending the Victor Hugo Market Tour. - Jessica
Tania was fantastic! It ended up just being my spouse and I for the experience. She shared so much helpful information regarding the market and the various types of foods and drinks available. It was our second day in Toulouse and was nice to get a well rounded tour of their specialties there in one place. We enjoyed a coffee/juice-bring cash for the drink, but it's very inexpensive. All other areas accepted card. We also enjoyed a delicious baguette and chocolatine (choc. croissant). It's frustrating how much the US charges for bread vs here. We later tried some some aged/dried meats, foie gras, wine, cherries, and cheeses. We enjoyed a crystallized violet that was quite interesting but tasty. She also sends you all the information about what we tried during the tour and other recommendations in Toulouse. It was a wonderful tour and highly recommend!
Glad the crystallized violet made an impression - it's so rare outside of Toulouse! Tania is so good at making the tasting feel like a proper education without it ever feeling like a class. And the follow-up notes are something I love about our tours - I want guests to keep the curiosity going after they leave the market. Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review. Hope Toulouse stays with you for a while! All the best, Jessica
The Victor Hugo Market tour was fantastic! Danielle was an incredible guide. We were able to meet several of the purveyors of the bakeries, salumeria, etc. We also had the opportunity to sample many of the market's specialties, and we visited an incredible cheese shop. At the end, Danielle took all the food we had gathered from the market, and we had a wonderful lunch. It was a great experience.
Really appreciate you writing this. The lunch at the end - gathering things from the vendors across the morning and then enjoying it all together - is the moment I love most about the market tour. Danielle has so much passion for the market and bringing people together through food. And that cheese shop is one I'll never take off the tour. I'm so happy to hear you loved the experience. - Jessica
The tour was a perfect curation of delicious pastries & chocolates in Toulouse! Peppered in were great historical facts on history and the artisanal process for the desserts. As soon as the tour was over, my friends and I did it in reverse! Jessica was an amazing guide and this was the highlight of our adventure in Toulouse!
Lovely to hear that the artisanal context around each chocolate and pastry came through - that's the part I never want to feel like a history lesson. Understanding how the producers we work with have made changes how you taste things. Doing the tour in reverse is honestly one of the best compliments you can pay me. Thank you for the kind words; hope Toulouse stays with you. - Jessica
Excellent experience! I learned about the history of Toulouse as well as the foods unique to Toulouse. The pace was perfect and the foods we sampled were all excellent. I appreciated the ability to try a wide variety of foods and taste items that can only be found in this region.
Really happy the variety came through - that mix of Toulouse food history and the chance to taste things you genuinely can't find elsewhere is what the market tour is built around. Lovely to read that the pace felt right too; that one takes some calibrating. Thanks for the kind words. There's always more to taste next time. - All the best, Jessica
What a fun and tasty way to learn about Toulouse through the lens of food! Jennifer was so friendly and engaging and you could tell she had great rapport with the vendors as well. The tour was the perfect way to experience Victor Hugo Marche, which can sometimes be overwhelming, and the small group afforded easy interaction. Perfect start time as the market was not crowded. The food and wine were plentiful (we weren't hungry again until the evening). Highly recommend!!
So glad you had a great morning - thank you for this! Jennifer is fantastic, and that relationship she has with the vendors is something that really does take time to build. Victor Hugo can feel like a lot if you don't know where to go, so it's always the goal to make it feel navigable and fun rather than chaotic. Love that you left full - that's the benchmark! Hope Toulouse treated you well beyond the market too. Best, Jessica
We took the Victor Hugo Market tour and it was fantastic. Our tour guide Jenn was very knowledgeable starting with the history of the market. She explained the various nuances of French acronyms like MOF and AOP. We thoroughly enjoyed the discussion about ham and sausage, as well as the bread, cheese, and (of course) excellent wines. What a great way to spend a few hours, we highly recommend it!
Thank you for capturing the morning so well. The MOF and AOP discussion is one of those small details Jenn does so well - she layers in the technical bits without ever making it feel like a lecture. Hearing that the ham, sausage, bread and cheese all landed makes my morning. All the best, Jessica
A passionate introduction to Victor Hugo’s food market in the centre of Toulouse at Danielle Bajoit. Danielle gave us a personal introduction to the history behind the individual merchants, French everyday life, the individual shops and a host of taste samples. At the same time, she gathered our group for a good social conversation. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to understand the local quality food and the local life in Toulouse
What Danielle does best is exactly what you described - that personal introduction to the merchants, the everyday rhythm of French life, the way the market actually works. Means a lot that the social side of the morning came through too. Our goal is to build connections! Thanks for taking the time to write this. Jessica
It is perfect! A comprehensive tour of the market with explanations of all the cuts, processes, uniqueness of each product. At the end we had a picnic of the items she purchased along the way. To accompany, we had a sparkling wine and a red. (Subject to change with the food selected). Danielle is a delight! Her English, French and ?? are perfect. So knowledgeable about all the food in the Market. Thank you so much!
Grateful for the kind note. That picnic at the end is honestly my favorite part - the local wines poured next to everything you've been smelling and tasting all morning. We work hard to make that final spread feel like a moment, not a sample tray. Hope Toulouse stays with you for a while. Jessica
