I had a fantastic experience on the Nagoya Food Tour: Taste Nagoya’s Local Specialties with Elly from Nagoya is Not Boring. As a solo traveler, it was a welcoming and easy way to explore Nagoya’s food culture, and I learned far more than I ever could have on my own. Elly was friendly, engaging, and very knowledgeable, sharing not only great food spots but also useful insights into local customs, dining etiquette, and everyday life in Nagoya. The tour was well paced and thoughtfully curated, with a great mix of restaurants and unique stops like a bustling department store food hall. The food highlights were unforgettable: Miso Nikomi Udon, Nagoya-style Tebasaki chicken wings at a famous, local izakaya, and especially Hitsumabushi (eel). When Elly said we were going to eat unagi (eel) I cringed. I’m used to unagi in sushi in the U.S., which is fine in small amounts, but not something I’d want as a full meal. This Hitsumabushi was completely different: mild, tender, and delicious. What a pleasant surprise. We even got to prepare fresh wasabi, which made the experience even more memorable. Even with prior research, I would have missed so many details without this tour. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting an authentic introduction to Nagoya’s food scene—especially with Elly as a guide.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review! ❤️ It was such a pleasure to have you on the tour. I’m really happy to hear that you enjoyed discovering Nagoya’s food scene and that the experience felt welcoming and insightful as a solo traveler. One of my favorite parts of guiding is sharing not only the food itself, but also the local culture, the gastronomy, and the little details that make Nagoya special. I’m especially glad that hitsumabushi turned out to be such a pleasant surprise. Seeing guests discover a dish they did not expect to love is always one of the most rewarding parts of the tour. Thanks again for joining me and for taking the time to share your experience. I hope the rest of your travels in Japan were wonderful, and I would be happy to welcome you again in Nagoya someday.
Our family went on the Flavours of Nagoya food tour with Eli as our guide. We had such a great experience! Eli was very knowledgeable of typical Nagoya food and took us to super interesting places to try some of the local specialties. We had miso nikomi udon first, then went to one of the oldest department stores in the city and walked through its food department where we bought all sorts of Japanese sweets and cookies and tried dried prawns. We then headed to a restaurant that specialised in hitsamabushi and even got to make our own wasabi. Finishing off, we went to have tebasaki (the local chicken wings). We had the best time!
Thank you so much for this wonderful review!! ❤️ I’m so happy to hear that your whole family enjoyed the Flavors of Nagoya food tour. It was such a pleasure sharing these local specialties with you. Nagoya has such a unique food culture, and I’m really glad you got to experience a bit of everything together. It was a total pleasure to guide you! Thanks again for joining us, and please come visit us again!
Amazing food. We learned so much about Nagoya and the food there. Our tour guide Elly was very knowledgeable and fun to be with. Come hungry and ready to walk. We loved ALL the food which is very rare. We have gone on food tours in Paris, Brussels, Chicago, Bologna, Kyoto and Osaka and this one was our favorite!
Wow, thank you so much for this amazing review 🥹 It really means a lot to hear that this was your favorite tour, especially after so many amazing food experiences around the world! So happy you and your husband enjoyed both the food and discovering Nagoya through it. It was such a pleasure spending time with you, walking, chatting, and sharing all those flavors. Thanks again for joining, and hope to welcome you again in Japan!
Patricia was a great guide and has a unique perspective being from Peru with Japanese ancestry, and moving to Japan when she was 19. The handmade udon noodles with the red miso broth was delicious. She took us to a high-end department store selling luxury brands where the basement had an astounding collection of counters selling food of all types that was so beautifully presented, and a lot of it is made for gifting. We had the best shrimp crackers I've ever eaten and a choice between a local sweet made of sweet potato or a pancake snack with choice of filling that we saw everywhere the rest of our time in Japan. The real highlight came at the end with the restaurant that she described as a special occasion place where we tried the unagi (eel). We were a bit worried that the eel would be too exotic for our tastes but it actually ended up being the most delicious thing we had for our entire trip - marinated in a sweet/savory sauce and charcoal grilled and served over rice, she served us the unagi three different ways. I will never forget how delicious it was!! Patricia was a great guide who answered all of our questions with real knowledge and definitely convinced us that Nagoya is not boring!

We had an unforgettable evening with Patricia, our tour guide. The tour was in English. She is really fond of the heart and made the evening special with her knowledge and great character. We felt very comfortable with her and would recommend the tour with her as a guide to anyone! It was great to get insights into Nagoya’s delicacies and visit hidden places that we would never have visited on our own. The food was excellent! Our personal highlight was the chickenwings at Izakaya. The place we liked so much that we stayed there even after the tour until late in the evening and were there again:) Recommendation goes out!

Liebe Karin, danke für die netten Worte. LG Lena
Worth it. You think you read so many web pages that you are prepared for Japan, but you aren't. We could have tried some of these things on our own of course, but we definitely would have missed out on a lot by doing so. Little things like the service button at one restaurant, the different ways to eat the eel, the way you eat Nagoya noodles, and the hidden gem of a huge subterranean market with every snack and dessert imaginable. In addition, we got tips about navigation, customs and laws to follow, and more.
Thank you very much for your detailed review. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the tour with us!
Our food tour of Nagoya was not boring, as promised. The insight to Japanese culture was perhaps even better than the food. Don’t get me wrong, the food was amazing! It was the first time I had unagi and it was very tasty! My favorite was the Nagoya spicy chicken wings though. Erica was a great and amusing tour guide! We thoroughly enjoyed our evening on the tour.

Educational tour about Nagoya and the local food. Tried several dishes we would have never thought to try otherwise. Appreciate the tour, would recommend.
