We did the Road to Hana tour in September 2026 and it didn’t disappoint. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us plenty of time to explore the black sand beach, waterfalls, etc. The drive is super windy with some blind hairpin turns, so I definitely recommend a tour for your first experience. Since someone else was driving both my husband and I could enjoy the views. Our guide would also stop along the way briefly for pictures of breathtaking scenery and views throughout the trip.

10/10 Would Recommend - Travis is the Man
Travis was an incredible tour guide. In addition to knowing the road and each of its attractions like the back of his hand, we learned he was a certified lifeguard when he heroically saved a drowning woman’s life at the waterfall we stopped to swim at. We’re so grateful to have had him as our tour guide, the experience wouldn’t have been the same without him! The continental breakfast and hot lunch both exceeded our expectations. We also had lots of great opportunities to purchase gifts and treats along the way. Finally, we were very appreciative of Travis’s driving, which completely minimized the discomfort of the many turns and single lane bridges on the road. This tour will always be of our favorite memories on Maui!! - Young D

Informative and Fun
Paula was our guide and she is a plethora of history of the area and people who made the entire experience enjoyable. Pre-coordination was efficient and pick up at our hotel was on time. We never felt rushed at any of the stops and learned a little more along the way from our friendly guide. The van was stocked with water and juice, and very comfortable for an 11+ hour day.

The Scam to Hana
The Road to Hana scam: a 12+ hour bus excursion where you don't even swim in Hana.
They charge $300 per person to haul you around in a van with over 154,000 miles on it and an air conditioner that makes noise without actually cooling anything down.
The itinerary makes no sense—it doesn't stop where it should and makes excessively long stops just so you buy things at tourist traps. The worst part was when they took us to eat: instead of stopping in Hana, they drove a few extra kilometers and took us to a gift shop. They made us get out under the pretense of setting up lunch while the driver moved the van forward a few meters. On that short walk, they force you to go through the tourist shop as if it were a duty-free store. When I finished eating, I asked her when we were leaving, and she told me to go take a lap around the shop while I waited.
The funniest part of the trip was hearing the driver complain that there were more and more tour operators doing this route... she didn't like the competition because their easy ride was coming to an end.
The drive itself is beautiful, but I recommend doing it in a rental car rather than suffering through the scam we endured.

We do want to clarify that our stops along the Road to Hana are intentionally selected to provide our guests with a variety of experiences while also supporting the local Hana community. Our stop at the flower farm is one example. We visit this local family-run business both to support the families who live and work in Hana and to give our guests an opportunity to experience locally made products and crafts. Many, if not all, of the gifts and products offered there are handmade locally.
Our goal is not simply to transport guests along the road, but to provide opportunities to experience the people, businesses, culture, and scenery that make Hana unique. We understand that not every stop or activity will appeal to every traveler, but these community-based experiences are an intentional part of our itinerary.
We also take comments regarding our vehicles and guest experience seriously and will share your feedback with our operations team. We appreciate you recognizing the beauty of the Road to Hana and regret that the overall experience did not align with what you were hoping for.

Highly recommend!
Paula was a wonderful driver and guide. We had considered driving this ourselves and while we could have, it was so nice to be driven by someone who narrated what we were seeing and made the whole experience feel like taking a drive with a friend. The other folks on the tour were super friendly and that also added to the experience. Highly recommend!

Great Experience
We had a wonderful experience on our Road to Hana tour. We spent the day with Travis who not only took us safely through the Road to Hana (hugely important because the road is definitely a tricky one) but also educated and entertained us the entire day. Travis is knowledgeable, friendly and engaging. My two teenagers learned (and retained!) so much about the culture, which is invaluable and the most important reason we booked the tour. He also knew everywhere to stop and exactly where to get the best photos. We would highly recommend this tour and Travis. We appreciated all that he did for us.
