We spent most of the time in the Duomo church and learned very little about the social and political history of Siena. We were told little in depth about the ruling families, the City’s development and economy. The guide was very low energy and seemed at a loss at what to show us. We know little more about Siena than when we started….. should just have read Wikipedia. One of the worst tours we have booked through Viator.
TLDR: not as advertised. Our private tour guide was not actually a licensed guide and not legally allowed to act as a guide. They struggled with conversational level English and couldn’t provide any detailed explanations. Full review: We arranged a private walking tour of Siena for two, for about 200 euros. We specified that we wanted to learn about Il Campo and the Duomo. Our guide was very kind but said upfront that she could not explain any art history to us. She also said that she had limited English and she struggled to explaining anything beyond very superficial details. She had no agenda or plan. When we asked if we could go into some museums she told us she wasn’t a licensed guide so isn’t allowed to explain anything in the museums to us. She also fell silent whenever we passed other tour groups. One hour into our 3 hour tour we decided to stop early because we felt we could learn more by ourselves. We messaged the company through Viator explaining the situation and requesting a partial refund and still have not heard back from them. We ended up listening to the free Rick Steves audio walking tour of the city (which I recommend) and learned a lot more than we would have if we had stayed with our “guide”.
Maria was an informative guide who explained a lot about the history of Siena and some of the politics. We enjoyed the tour snd found the 2 hours to be enough in the heat.
This was a SCAM. We did not get a private tour but a group tour with a non-accredited guide who really struggled to speak English. We only learnt about the lack of accreditation toward the end of a horrendous tour when a real guide approached ours to explain that what he was doing was illegal and could be heavily fined. Asked Viator for a refund, however they only refunded 20% of the total.
We really enjoyed our tour. The guide was knowledgeable and very passionate about her city. We were able to see many highlights that we had hoped to see on our very short trip to Siena. Very glad we booked this tour
Anita did a wonderful job of showing us around the “neighborhoods” and churches of Siena. She really brought the city to life for us, tying in the history of the horse race competition to life today. We loved talking with her and hearing her stories. She was flexible meeting us as we were a bit late arriving. I highly recommend a walk around Siena with Anita!
Marianna our tour Guide was Wonderful! She educated us about the history of Sienna, was very knowledgeable and proud of living there and engaged with us during our private tour. Sienna is a truly Beautiful and diverse City to visit and a must for any Tuscany visit.
Our guide Marianna was incredible. It was a terrible cold and rainy day but she happily showed us her city of Siena. We didn't just see the touristy site but side streets and great views. She was very interesting to listen too. I would highly recommend this tour.
We wcertainly covered a lot of history and a lot of steps. A great way to see Siena’s districts and highlights in 3 hrs.
Jacopo was a most generous and informative guide. We learnt so much about the history and traditions of Siena during our walk.
