Private 3-hour Acropolis + Ancient Agora tour while we were in Athens on a cruise. Paid $360 for the guide; tickets not included. Company wanted €136 to buy them for us — we got the two Acropolis and two Agora tickets on the official site for about €100. At the time it just felt flat. After other guided tours on the islands later in the trip, we realized how basic this one was. The talks at each stop were fine — 5–7 minutes, clear, accurate. That wasn't the issue. Between stops it was mostly silence. If we asked something we got a short answer and then kept walking. No stories, no extra details, nothing that connected one site to the next. What you want from a private guide is passion — the kind that's infectious, that makes you fascinated with the subject whether you asked or not. One question should turn into ten things you never would have looked up. Volume. Stories. The stuff you don't get from the free audio guide or a phone. Instead this was a competent briefing at each monument and quiet in between. Not a bad morning — the sites are incredible. Just not what $360 plus tickets should feel like.
