Arashiyama is a scenic district located in western Kyoto and is one of the city’s most iconic sightseeing areas. Known for its beautiful natural surroundings and traditional atmosphere, Arashiyama has been a popular retreat since the Heian period. The area is famous for the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, where tall bamboo stalks create a peaceful and unique walking path. Another highlight is Togetsukyo Bridge, a historic bridge spanning the Katsura River, offering stunning seasonal views, especially during cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons. Visitors can also explore Tenryu-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its Zen garden and scenic landscape design. With its combination of nature, culture, and relaxed pace, Arashiyama is an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Kyoto, photography lovers, and travelers seeking an authentic Japanese experience.
Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most famous landmarks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Originally built in the late 14th century as a retirement villa for the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple. The pavilion’s upper two floors are covered in gold leaf, beautifully reflecting on the surrounding pond and garden, creating a striking and elegant scene in every season. The carefully designed strolling garden and tranquil setting represent classic Japanese aesthetics and Zen philosophy. Kinkaku-ji is a must-visit site for first-time visitors to Kyoto and offers excellent photo opportunities, making it one of the most iconic and photographed locations in Japan.
Nishiki Market is a lively shopping street located in the heart of Kyoto and is often referred to as “Kyoto’s Kitchen.” With a history of over 400 years, the market is famous for its wide variety of local foods and traditional ingredients. The covered arcade stretches for several blocks and is lined with shops selling Kyoto-style street food, fresh seafood, pickles, sweets, tea, and local specialties. Visitors can sample many items while walking, making it an excellent place to experience Kyoto’s food culture. Nishiki Market is a great stop for first-time visitors, food lovers, and anyone interested in everyday Kyoto life. It also offers plenty of opportunities to shop for unique souvenirs and regional delicacies.
Gion is Kyoto’s most famous traditional district, located near Yasaka Shrine, and is best known for its well-preserved streets, wooden machiya townhouses, and strong connection to geisha culture. Walking through Gion, especially along Hanamikoji Street and the scenic Shirakawa area, visitors can experience the elegant atmosphere of old Kyoto. The district is home to traditional teahouses, fine dining restaurants, and cultural venues where geiko and maiko (Kyoto geisha) continue to perform classical arts. Gion is an ideal place for an evening stroll and offers a unique glimpse into Kyoto’s historic charm, making it a must-visit destination for first-time visitors and those interested in Japanese culture.
Fushimi Inari Shrine, where a long corridor of thousands of Torii Shrine gates, a bright red tunnel along the mountain path, is an amazing experience. You could walk through every gate, feel the ancient sense, and take photos. The Torii shrine gates form a maze, wish you can find your way out.
Perched atop a gentle eminence on Kyoto's eastern flank, Kiyomizudera Temple commands a panoramic vista of the ancient cityscape. The temple's celebrated stage, hoisted by colossal pillars, stands as an iconic tableau of Japanese culture. Yet, the allure of Kiyomizudera transcends the mere beauty of its view; the journey to this sacred site begins a tale of wonder long before one sets foot on the temple's hallowed ground. You could pray in Jishu Shrine for true love coming to you. And walk to the Otowa waterfall, drinking a little bit of the water for luck and health.

This was a beautiful tour! I loved it! Outstanding! Our tour guide, George was amazing, and the driver as well, got us around in a very comfortable vehicle.

George and our driver will be delighted to know they helped make your tour enjoyable and comfortable. We truly appreciate your kind words and hope to welcome you back for another amazing adventure in Japan!
The providor never picked us up and we never got to see Kyoto. I had tried to clarify the pickup point by email. When I got no response, I called Viator and a very nice lady contacted the providor on our behalf She was assured that there would be no problem and passed that info back to us. I had asked her to be sure to mention our ship Westerdam. There is no excuse for the failure under the circumstances. Needless to say, they need to refund our pAyment
Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely regret the disappointment and inconvenience caused by this experience and appreciate the opportunity to clarify the situation. According to the booking details, this reservation originally included only driver-guide service and did not include a vehicle. However, in order to better support your trip and help ensure the service could proceed smoothly, we arranged both a vehicle and a driver for you at no additional arrangement concerns on the service day. Our driver arrived on time at the designated pickup location, Tempozan Port, based on the booking information provided. Before and upon arrival, both our operations team and the driver made multiple attempts to contact you, but unfortunately we were unable to reach you and could not locate you at the agreed meeting point. As a result, despite our efforts and preparations, the tour could not proceed as scheduled. We understand your frustration and recognize how disappointing it must have been to miss the experience. We always strive to provide reliable service and clear communication for every guest, and we continue reviewing our procedures to further improve coordination for future bookings. Thank you again for your feedback. Best regards, Kansai Holiday
The driver, Kaibo, did a good job at picking us up and dropping us off at various locations. However, he was not a guide at all. He had very little knowledge of the sights we visited (Kiyomizu dera, Fushimi inari, etc.) and offer no interesting anecdotes or insider tips on making the best use of our time for our first visit to Kyoto. He also did not seem knowledgeable about restaurants in the area. We requested a typical Kyoto lunch spot and ended up in a Chinese grill your own chicken establishment.
Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We are pleased to know that the transportation arrangements met your expectations, and that Kaibo was able to provide smooth pickups and drop-offs throughout the day. However, we are truly sorry to hear that the guiding experience did not meet the standard you expected for your first visit to Kyoto. We sincerely apologize that the information and recommendations provided were not as helpful or insightful as they should have been, especially regarding the sightseeing guidance and lunch arrangements. We understand how important local knowledge and thoughtful recommendations are in creating a memorable experience, and we regret that we fell short in this area. Please know that your feedback is extremely valuable to us. We will carefully review this matter with our team and use your comments to improve the quality of our service. Thank you again for your honesty and understanding, and we hope to have the opportunity to provide you with a much better experience in the future.
This was a highlight of our time in Kyoto. AJ our guide and driver provided a custom experience with white glove service. He helped accommodate our large group of 9 including two very young children and made it a fun and enjoyable time. It was pouring rain but we were not deterred thanks to his help getting us dropped off at key points, helping with umbrellas, and calling ahead to get us a table at a great family restaurant for lunch.
Thank you very much for your valuable feedback and kind recognition. We are pleased to know that you were satisfied with the trip and the driver’s service. Your kind words have been shared with our team, which is truly encouraging for us. We will continue to strive to provide even better service to every guest. We look forward to serving you again.
The car was very comfortable and our driver-guide was great and really helpful during the trip. Kiyomizu-dera was quite crowded, and I honestly wouldn’t recommend wearing leather shoes — I wore mine and ended up with blisters. Booking a private car turned out to be a very good decision, especially since my friend’s child is only in 3rd grade. I don’t think they could have managed the whole day on foot. Maybe when they’re older, we’ll try doing part of Kyoto walking next time.
Thank you very much for sharing such a detailed and thoughtful review! We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the comfort of the vehicle and found our driver-guide helpful throughout the trip. Kyoto’s popular sites can indeed be quite crowded, and we’re happy that the private car made the day more comfortable, especially when traveling with a child. We truly appreciate your insights and would love to welcome you back in the future for another way of exploring Kyoto when the time is right!
We had a wonderful experience on the Tour. From start to finish, everything was smooth and well organized. Our driver was punctual, polite, and very knowledgeable about Kyoto. He gave us helpful suggestions while still allowing us the flexibility to explore at our own pace. What we really appreciated was the comfort and convenience. Kyoto can be quite busy, and having a private vehicle made the day so much more relaxing. We didn’t have to worry about navigating public transport or rushing between sites. The itinerary was tailored to our interests, and we were able to see both famous landmarks and some quieter local spots. Overall, it was a very enjoyable and stress-free way to explore Kyoto. Highly recommended for anyone who wants a more personal and comfortable sightseeing experience.
Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful review! We’re truly delighted to hear that you had such a wonderful experience and that everything went smoothly from start to finish. It’s great to know our driver’s punctuality, professionalism, and local knowledge of Kyoto helped make your day both comfortable and enjoyable. We’re especially happy that you appreciated the flexibility of the itinerary and the convenience of having a private vehicle—Kyoto can indeed be busy, and being able to explore at your own pace makes all the difference. Thank you again for your recommendation. It was our pleasure to be part of your journey, and we hope to welcome you back for another memorable experience in Japan in the future! 😊
Riko drove us around the whole day in Kyoto and was a great host. The day of our tour was pouring rain so he suggested other activities for us to do that would've kept us dry. We did opt out and stuck to the original plans but we appreciated his thoughtfulness. He was extremely friendly and patient with us. We never felt rushed by Riko. He would drop us off and then send a WhatsApp message on where to meet afterwards. He was a great driver/host. The van was clean and had water bottles for us in every cup holder. There was even wifi in the car. We highly recommend booking this experience and request Riko!
Thank you so much for your lovely review! We’re really happy to hear that you enjoyed our private car service and had a great time during your trip. It means a lot to us to know that you felt comfortable and well taken care of. Our team always tries our best to make every journey smooth and enjoyable, and your kind words truly brighten our day! We hope to see you again soon for another wonderful trip in Japan! 🌟 Warm regards, Kansai holiday.
