Blue Ice Discovery – Guided Glacier Hike from Skaftafell

This was a fantastic tour. The company was wonderfully helpful and responsive as we prepared for our trip and the glacier itself was stunning, but I must say that it was really our guide, Przemyslav, who made this experience truly memorable. He was genuinely enthusiastic and gregarious, was very knowledgeable about glaciation and local geology, interwove tales of Icelandic lore and mythology, and gave us experiences that we’ll remember forever. The group included people of diverse ages and athletic abilities and all of us felt safe, challenged and engaged. This is a real testament to his mountaineering skills. Bottom line, this was one of the great highlights of our Iceland trip. Thanks Icelandia, and thanks Prezemyslav!

BEWARE - if you arrive even 5 minutes late for this tour, they will leave without you and not refund your money! We were delayed due to a bridge closing. We called multiple times to let them know that we would arrive 6-10 minutes late for a 1:30 pm tour. They informed us that we should have arrived 20 minutes early (which they only state in the fine print of your ticket), and that they could not hold the tour. We arrived at 1:41 and they had already left! I am still fighting to get my money back for this expensive tour, not to mention the hours we drove to get to Skaftafell National Park. We ended up going with a competitor who was wonderful and accommodating, but these are expensive excursions, and I was definitely not counting on paying twice for the same trip. Extremely frustrating and disappointing, to say the least!!

Apple maps did not recognize the Skaftafell Base Camp, and instead took us to the wrong place. We eventually found it by putting "Icelandic Mountain Guides" into Google Maps. I see now there are GPS coordinates on the website, but the directions and coordinates weren't included in the emails sent to us. As a result of getting lost, we arrived around the start of our tour instead of 30 minutes early as we had intended. The guides were very brusque about it and rushed us through getting the equipment, which left us wondering if we would be safe doing the hike. It ended up being ok in terms of safety, but the hike itself was very strenuous and not as picturesque as we had hoped. My husband was under the impression that it was a family-friendly, relatively easy hike, but it definitely isn't appropriate for kids below 12 years of age, and it definitely wasn't easy. My husband and I are in our 50s and in decent shape, but we felt like were holding up the group and did not feel very supported by the guide during the hike.

Greta, Icelandic guide, is amazing. She is very good at telling stories and the history of Iceland. The group came together as strangers and ended as friends. Very challenging trek. My first multi-day hike. I loved every minute.

We had an incredible glacier hike with Ola! She was funny, experienced, and incredibly knowledgeable, making the entire experience both educational and enjoyable. Throughout the hike, she shared fascinating facts about the glacier, explained how climate change is impacting these incredible natural formations, and gave us clear safety instructions that helped everyone feel confident walking on the ice. The tour provided all the essential glacier gear, including helmets, crampons, and an ice axe. Rain gear and hiking boots were also available to rent, making it easy to come prepared. Our tour was originally forecasted to have rain, but by the time we reached the glacier, the weather had cleared enough for an amazing experience. Ola made the most of every moment, taking us to some of the glacier’s most unique features and always keeping an eye out for interesting spots to explore. One of the coolest moments was when she clipped us into a safety line so we could safely lean over and look down into a beautiful blue glacier crevasse. It was such a unique experience and something we’ll never forget. This was one of the highlights of our Iceland trip. If you’re considering a glacier hike, I highly recommend this tour. It’s an incredible opportunity to experience these amazing glaciers while we still have them and to better understand why they’re worth protecting. I already can’t wait to come back someday for an ice cave tour!

It was our first experience with a glacier and it will be unforgettable. Our guide Angelika not only taught us the basics of hiking with crampons and moving around a glacier, she also shared a lot of knowledge about the glacier and ice formations. We learned a lot, fully enjoyed the experience, and wish to go again in winter! Highly recommended!

Superbly guided tour; the guide Przemyslav told us a lot about the glaciers. He had a great overview of the group and led with a lot of humor, heart, and good spirits.

A fantastic tour, even though it drizzled on and off the whole way through. Saw most of the glacier at the start before the clouds rolled in. But we had a fantastic guide (Shamic - hope i spelt it right) to make it all perfect. His passion and enthusiasm for glaciers and volcanoes oozed from him and have us lots of interesting information about these formations. He knew exactly where to go to get the best photos - and he makes a great photograher! Didn't get a chance to walk down the bottom of a crevice but it is constantly changing. The booking office is so helpful too. I booked 5 min before the tour started. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Highly recommend this company.
