We loved visiting the Basilica del Voto Nacional in Quito. From the outside, we are impressed by the original gargoyles representing iguanas, condors or turtles of the Galapagos. Inside, the central nave is huge and bright, and the 24 side chapels represent all the provinces of Ecuador. The real highlight is to climb the towers, cross the roof and climb a small staircase steep in a turret to enjoy a breathtaking view of the whole city and the surrounding hills. Buttresses, columns and sculptures mix European Gothic with local touches, and the underground crypt adds an interesting historical dimension. Every detail tells the story of the art and faith of Ecuadorians. We keep a really strong memory, between architecture, history and spectacular panorama.
A beautiful church that you pay 2$ for 65 and above or 4$ regular. You can take a stair up to highest level 3 and walk through a tourist trap little store and out to a patio that you can oversee the entire city. There are stairs all around that you can climb up to go even higher. Second floor called " is a level above the church. It's so beautiful. The round art craft glass work centerpiece is just beautiful. There's a huge church Organ, I wish someone was playing it. You can pay another fee to go inside the church.
It is spectacular, very large, and the possibility of climbing the towers of the Basilica is unique, but it is very high. So if you're afraid of heights be careful. Inside the place is impressive
Visiting this church rivals almost any of the many we were at in Europe. From the outside, it is wonderful. The ornate gothic details and the sheer size. Inside it is beautiful as well. The true uniqueness comes from going up the towers and heading outside onto the roof and up one of the spires! The views from everywhere are fantastic.
