The Casina Spezzaferri is an 18th-century building in the midst of the vineyards, belonging to the same family since its inception. Upon her father's death in 2017, Giorgia returned to Lecce with her two daughters to take care of the family property. Until then, she was a lawyer in international arbitration law in Paris. The estate no longer cultivates its vineyards (5 hectares): many hectares have been sold in past years. The estate harvests its grapes and sells them to a neighboring estate. Giorgia personally conducts the tour of the gardens dotted with stone columns and metal arches, the old stone press, and the brass tanks, as well as the ground floor of the historically rich house. Lunch is prepared in the large kitchen (fireplace, period stoves) and enjoyed in the family dining room. The lunch was simple but excellent: antipasti and pasta. We were pleased to share it with Giorgia. We tasted three wines: a slightly astringent white, a very good, winey rosé, and an excellent red (Negroamaro grape). We advised her to decant it for her next tasting: the shelves in the living room displayed a beautiful collection of decanters. These are not the wines from the estate but those from the neighboring estate, partially blended with grapes from the estate (except for the white). Giorgia has set herself an ambitious goal: to pass the estate on to her daughters so as not to be the last generation. The challenge is twofold: to balance the operation of the estate and to convince her daughters to take up the torch. Giorgia is a cultured, passionate, friendly, and endearing French-speaking Italian. It was a true pleasure to share her story and ambition over lunch in the charmingly old-fashioned atmosphere of the family dining room.
