I booked a four-hour guided tour of Malé through Booking.com (see attachment) and paid about $55 for it. My tour guide was Kyle. Overall, the experience was rather negative. I’d like to highlight the following points: 1. Premature termination: Instead of the booked 4 hours, Kyle unilaterally ended the tour after less than 2 hours, citing the heat. 2. Pressure to buy and inflated prices: I had the distinct impression that the tour was primarily designed to steer tourists toward overpriced vendors. At the local market, I was deliberately led to a specific stall where I was charged $34 for local sweets—a price that turned out to be at least three times higher than the market rate. Furthermore, even though I had explicitly stated that I wasn’t interested, I was led into a souvenir shop. 3. Unjustified additional charges: After I had already tipped Kyle, he demanded another $10, claiming it was for motorcycle gas. I had never been informed of such additional charges in advance. I consider this behavior to be extremely unprofessional.
Guide was prompt to pick up and assisted as we didn’t realise transfer fee needed to be cash. However, he had limited knowledge of the attractions as we walked past each (comments such as built 500-600yrs ago) told us the island add on was pointless as nothing to see but did take us. He was friendly but most time spent at markets encouraging we buy from a friend and high sales pressure at souvenirs shop which I feel we got scammed on price and sales assistance wouldn’t take no for an answer so spent way more money than intended on items clearly not worth price. Only regret I have all trip was inability to walk away however needed shop to get cash out for transfer fee we planned to pay for on card. Wish we had known in advance so could have avoided the whole situation.
We were in Male with a cruise ship and our guide Sabi showed us everything worth seeing 👍. Of course, we could also make stops in shops. It was a great tour.
A very enjoyable tour of Male! Don’t just head out to your hotel or resort without understanding the country you are in and the amazing people who live here. This is a walking tour so wear comfortable shoes. Pants are required for men to enter the mosque and women must cover their hair, shoulders, and knees. Be sure to bring these things with you - it’s worth the effort! Thanks to Hassan who was an excellent guide with a lot of pride in his country.
The guide was very knowledgeable and a pleasure to be with. We covered the major sites which were all fairly close to my hotel.
There was very little information given by the guide during the tour. As Male is a small town , you can easily complete the tour easily on your own.
We had 2 guides, both were students on break. The first young man accompanied us to Villiingili island. There wasn't much to see there, but it was a different perspective of the country, very rural. The second guide, a pre-med student, walked and talked us around the main parts of the city. He was very knowledgeable and informative. The walk was at a good pace and ended in the local marked where we tried samples of a number of local snack foods; all very tasty. The city is small and compact, very walkable.
This is a great way to have a better understanding of the every day lives of people that live and work in the Maldives. Our guide Loly, did an excellent job showing us all aspects of daily life. We saw mosques, schools, parks, beaches and Villemale where many local people live is a hidden gem. We also saw the markets and the port distribution area to better understand where all the supplies come from and how they are distributed throughout the islands. I highly recommend this tour to see the real day to day life of Maldivian people. This tour was taken as a cruise excursion.
Our local guide was AMAZING!! The timing and day of our tour was perfection: Saturday at 8:00 - quiet streets, cool morning and informative guide provided a relaxing, well timed tour. Varah Bodu shukriyya.
I had an enjoyable tour of Male and Villimale with Aslam. While the islands are small and walkable, it was worth having a guide: he did a great job answering my many questions about the history, culture, economy and daily life of the people. He even showed me a few place not on the tour itinerary, like the Stingrays watching spot, Tsunami Monument, and Republic Square. He’s also super relatable as well.
