Shyama’s market tour and cooking class was awesome. We went with our kids (aged 7 to 13) and started at the Kandy Central Market, where she told us all about the local vegetables and fruits, and we bought the ingredients for our dinner together. The market is definitely an experience in its own right! From there they took us to their place, which has a beautifully built outdoor kitchen, and we prepared a wide variety of really tasty Sri Lankan dishes: chicken curry, egg curry, jackfruit curry, banana flower salad and many more. Shyama explained every step carefully and made sure everyone was involved in the preparations, even our youngest. Total experience was about 4.5 hours and return to Kandy was an easy 15-minutes Tuk Tuk drive. Highly recommended!!!
This was really an experience we will look back on! We met with shyama who led the cooking course at Kandy food market, and helped to select the many vegetables we used in the different dishes. They gave themselves plenty of time to show us various vegetables and plants as well as tell us what they were used for! Then we were driven in tuk tuk home to their location. We had booked with 4 other girls from England and it was super nice. We got some tea from Sri Lanka before we started cooking. Shyama, showed us how to prepare the different vegetables and how much we should use of the different spices/vegetables she had. After that we got promises to be responsible for virtually all cooking where shyama was there to help with how much we had to use of the various ingredients. She was really good at telling and how they use it, as well as where it comes from. Out there we tried to open and scrub a coconut, where we would make coconut milk, and coconut cream. It was really exciting to hear about all the dishes and to help make it! Shyama was good at getting everyone to do all the cooking in the kitchen so everyone was included. 🙂 The food was wonderful, and the best Sri Lankan food we have tasted down here. Finally we got some delicious pancakes with caramelized coconut flour. Absolutely fantastic All in all a really nice, tasteful, cultural experience with completely calm framework and good mood. You can really feel shyama wants its guests the best, and would like to learn from him ❤️ We would definitely recommend taking you down to the market to see and hear about the different vegetables and fruits they use. We felt safe and included throughout! Thank you for a lovely experience and this trip can definitely be recommended.
This experience was amazing from start to finish. It was so great to get involved with cooking the Sri Lankan dishes, and all 6 of us in the group were urged and supported to contribute equally. We made so much food and were able to enjoy all of it afterwards. It all tasted amazing. The value for money is great and the team are so friendly and supportive. Would definitely recommend this to anybody looking for an authentic cooking class experience whilst in Kandy!
We really liked this cooking class. We were 10 guests and cooked a traditional dinner together… We had a lot of fun…Highly recommended In the end, we really enjoyed our menu. The recipes were sent via WhatsApp…to cook at home
If you're looking for an authentic Sri Lankan cooking experience, I can't recommend Kandy Village Cooking Class highly enough. Our day began with a visit to the local market with Shyama, who took the time to explain all the ingredients we would be using and happily answered our many questions about the different fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices we came across. It was a fascinating introduction to Sri Lankan cooking and culture. Once we arrived at the cooking class, it was pure joy from start to finish. Shyama was absolutely brilliant, and she was helped by a lovely friend whose name I unfortunately didn't catch. They both made us feel so welcome and were incredibly patient, friendly and knowledgeable. As Shyama said, they were our "sous chefs" – our helpers – guiding us through every stage while letting us do the cooking ourselves. We learned to make an amazing selection of dishes: Chicken Curry, Dhal Curry, Aubergine Curry (using her husband's special recipe), Banana Flower Curry, Pumpkin Curry, crispy Popadoms and a delicious fresh Cucumber Salad. Every step was explained clearly, making it easy to follow and enjoyable, even for beginners. One of the highlights was cooking in traditional clay pots over both gas and an open fire. It made the whole experience feel so authentic. We loved using the traditional cooking utensils so much that we bought some clay pots the very next day to bring home to the UK, and I can't wait to recreate these wonderful dishes. Thank you so much, Shyama and your lovely friend, for such a fantastic and memorable cooking class. Every time I cook these Sri Lankan recipes, I'll think of you both and remember what a wonderful experience we had. Highly recommended!
We completed a cooking class with Shyama tonight and had an amazing experience! She took us to the Kandy Central Market where she explained all the local fruit and veg. We were able to purchase our ingredients before coming back to her kitchen space. We made so many different meals and had so much fun doing so. Shyama and her family were so welcoming, knowledgeable and made our experience unforgettable! A must do when in Kandy
It was great to find ingredients on the market and then incorporate them into local curries, using an excellent English explanation. It was delicious and highly recommended.
We had a wonderful cooking workshop! The market tour was interesting, and the cooking session was well organized and a lot of fun. Our host was very friendly, welcoming, and made everyone feel comfortable. Highly recommended!
