This was our first time to see one of Italy’s prized paintings, and I was so excited! Fortunately, we were paired with a guide who had studied art history; and she helped to bring da Vinci’s Last Supper to life. The tour began outside in the Piazza di Santa Maria delle Grazie. Our guide explained that the admission time you have reserved will be strictly observed as they are very careful about how often the doors open and close as they work so hard to protect the painting’s environment. She then gave us some background information about da Vinci, the church’s role in the appearance of so many different Last Supper works by many different artists and how time, wars and preservation efforts have affected da Vinci’s masterpiece over the years. When we were able to enter the dining hall where the painting resides, I was awestruck. The work is enormous and is so beautiful, it brought tears to my eyes. Our guide gave us some more info and details and then invited us to just sit if we wanted to, to just absorb the moment. Time in the room is capped at 15 minutes, so we were unshared outside to end our tour. It was a wonderful introduction to Italy’s mind-blowing number of breathtaking paintings!

Go early, very moving and we had a lot of space inside to move around and take it all in. Our tour guide was excellent!!

Guide Katerina was great: very knowledgeable and very good at explaining. She was infectious with her enthusiasm during the English-language tour. The small-group selfie in front of The Last Supper (with the announcement of the email delivery) is a nice idea.

Tickets are so hard to get you almost have to go with a tour. I felt like Elena was a fabulous guide and her English was superb. The insight gained by viewing The Last Supper with her was an emotional and enlightening experience. Well worth the extra expense to have a smaller group.
