Carl was an exceptional host and curated an excellent experience for us. We had a wonderful time with him and the wineries we visited. I strongly recommend this tour!
I'll keep this short - Carl made our tour of the Mosel region an incredible day out. He is an amazing host and local wine expert. He has strong connections with the people at the wineries, big and small, that make you feel like you're part of the community as well. And he is incredibly thoughtful about the small things as well, like bringing along some delicious snacks since our lunch was going to be later in the day. If you're thinking about taking a tour with him, just do it, you won't be disappointed.
I have taken wine tours in many wine regions in the world but none can be compared to the informative and well-organized tours I had with Weinkopfe. There were a total of 3 separate tours—-Mosel, Pfalz and Rheingau. I mentioned to Carl I am working on my CSW certification so I need to get as “wine-geeky” as possible. Carl arranged for me to talk with each wine maker to learn about the terroir of the region and the winemaking process. I sampled a copious amount of wine with a special emphasis of vertical tastings so I could tell how the wine evolves with age and impacted by the climate of the year it was grown. He also showed me the various ways the vines were trellised and the types of soil in the field. We even picked some rocks to add to my collection. The icing on the cake? I purchased a total of 2 cases of wine to bring back home. Instead of having to lug them with me (I had 2 more destinations on this trip), Carl was able to ship them for me for a very reasonable fee. I received them impeccably packed upon arriving home :-) In my opinion, Weinkopfe has met all my expectations and more and I could not asked for a better tour experience. It has my strongest recommendation and highest endorsement.
Carl’s tour of the Mosel was the best wine tour we have experienced. He was a wonderful host, providing snacks and treats upon arrival and in between stops. He is very knowledgeable, and through the tastings that he arranged , he was able to demystify German Riesling for us. He exposed us to both a larger more established producer and a smaller “garage” style producer (we tasted wine in a shed with the owner – who hand labeled bottles for us). Carl also arranged a lovely lunch in a beautiful river front restaurant with an amazing bottle of wine. Overall a fantastic experience
The day spent with Carl driving us through the beautiful Mosel Valley was beyond perfect. Carl was very attuned to our likes in Riesling wines and worked in wineries and even a special treat at lunch that matched these likes. He picked us up at Mainz Train Station and had excellent breakfast breads. The first winery we went to was a small one on the banks of the Mosel, but the owner (- 12?? generation ) took all of the time in the world to let us taste over 20 wines as we compared flavors and notes. We explained how in the US we don't get find older Rieslings, and were treated to some special older samples. We then visited a winery high on the hills overlooking a bend in the Mosel and enjoyed more wines. Lunch was simple but very tasty with a special treat of a 48 year old Riesling! Carl also made stops for photo ops and the one we both love is the photo Carl took of us under the Piesporter Goldtropfchen sign. We served wine from the vineyard at our wedding. Bottom line, just book a tour with Carl, you will be SOOO happy you did!
Everything.!!!!!Our guide Carl was wonderful. The landscape was beautiful and the Wine was just what we wanted. Thank you for a Great Day
Karl picked us up at our Trier hotel and drove us into the beautiful Mosel wine region. Our tasting experiences gave us a glimpse of the tradition of generations of family wine makers and an innovative new producer in the valley. We also enjoyed a surprising wine pairing lunch!
Carl met us at the hotel with a bottle of sekt. It was delightful. We had a chatty drive to the first winery. There we got to taste a LOT of wine. All of it good. We were there for quite a while. We got back in the car and made a detour into a vineyard to experience the steepness of the vines. The weather was perfect. A lunch stop at a BBQ where we had a very old bottle of Riesling and BBQ ribs - a perfect match! Who knew?!?! Then on to the next vineyard. Much smaller but equally as good. Did a substantial tasting. Then the drive home. Carl is going to ship our purchases. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and willing to take us pretty much anywhere. I would sign up with him again.
Slight change of plans! Carl was very communicative, he had another couple who wanted to do a tour the same day, and we ended up in the Pfalz region. As soon as Carl picked us up, it was a good time. We went to two fabulous wineries where we sampled wines from different vintages and soils and compared them. My wife and I are not well-versed in wine, but the couple with us was. We all had a great time, and Carl joined us for a beer afterward. Then he kindly shipped our wine back for us so we wouldn’t have to lug 7 bottles back on an airline. Excellent wine, excellent people, overall a “grape” experience.
Our guide was enthusiastic & knowledgeable. He took us to interesting wineries. It included 2 wineries plus a delicious lunch. We enjoyed the introduction to many Rieslings!
