Highly recommended if you are looking for an archaeological experience outside of normal itineraries. Although the trip is about 3.5 hours by car (on good road), it is worth it (it is not much longer than going to Alexandria). We saw the tombs of Beni Hasan, Tel El Amarna (we didn’t see everything as it’s quite big and there’s no time, but it’s worth it) and Tuna El Gebel practically alone.
Very good guidance in really interesting historical places. The drive there is long, but it is definitely worth it. It was really one of my highlights in my trip to Egypt.
Walid the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer my questions. Both he and the driver Abdullah were also very accommodating of my request to switch out one of the planned stops for Tell el Amarna instead and guiding me on the fly. It might be better to book this one with at least a couple of people though as doing it solo was pricey, but was very lucky to get these two to help me! Also fair warning, there is a lot of driving but you definitely get off the beaten path and at least when I went, there were no other tourists which was fantastic. Thanks for a great trip!!
If you like your history and to go off yhe beaten track then this is for you. The tombs were amazing to see built high on the cliffs over looking the nile. The catacombs in the middle of the desert were totally unexpected. Be prepared, it is a long drive there and back and because of the need for police convoys there can be delays and some waiting (the driver coped brilliantly with it all and kept it as smooth as possible!). Our guide, Walid, kept us informed all the way though and was a fountain of knowledge. Definitely worth it if you want to see something most others won't.
