Despite arriving 30 minutes early and letting the owner know we were there, the vehicle departed without us (he was apparently parked around the side of the building, so we didnt see him). No answer to phone calls and texts to the owner. Fortunately for us after 15 minutes another Sitka Tours Vehicle arrived and the driver managed to get hold of the owner and then drove us to catch up with our tour. Our guide admitted he didnt check his manifest and “thought” everyone was on board. I was exceedingly upset at his lack of professionalism and also disappointed that the owner did not reach out to us and apologize. Overall the tour was OK, but you can honestly rent a vehicle or grab a cab and make your own way to the three stops. You’ll save a lot of money!
Our tour guide Teddy (Theodore) went out of his way to show us all the best spots in Ketchikan. We were lucky to enjoy beautiful weather and we saw a lot of wildlife including deer, eagles and a young bear. We saw a beautiful waterfall, amazing totem poles, and some King salmon. Highly recommend this tour.
We enjoyed the tour we got all of the spots with ample time to see them. The guide was great with information about each stop. I would recommend this tour if you want something quick
Others in our family group (30) rented cars and did the same itinerary but having Alex as a guide for our group of 11 was perfect for us. He was very knowledgeable and made the totem pole stories come alive for my grandsons ages 8 and 10. Absolutely worth it to skip the lines, not have to drive and have a more personalized experience.
Not what I expected, I thought we were going to go see bears in thd wild not 6 bears held in captivity. Plus it made me sad to learn what Alaska does to the baby left behind by the momma bears. I enjoyed seeing the bears non the less. And the same for the raptors. All animals captured.
Thank you for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed seeing the bears, even if the experience wasn't what you expected. While the bears are living in captivity, Fortress of the Bear is a sanctuary that provides lifelong care for orphaned bears that cannot be returned to the wild. Their mission is to give these animals a safe home while educating visitors about bear conservation and wildlife in Alaska. The Alaska Raptor Center has a similar mission. It is a wildlife rehabilitation center that treats injured birds with the goal of releasing them back into the wild whenever possible. The birds you see on display are those with permanent injuries that make survival in the wild impossible, so they remain in human care while helping educate the public. We understand that seeing animals in human care can bring up mixed emotions. We hope that learning about the important rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation work being done at both organizations helps provide additional perspective. We're grateful you chose to tour with us and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience.
What an amazing adventure. Sid was very informative and gave us the unique history of Sitka as only a local can. We stopped at the raptor center and saw birds that where injured in the wild who can no longer survive on their own. Next was the Fortress of the Bear, all I can say is get ready for cuteness overload. As an added bonus there were also 20 to 30 Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles in the trees above the bears competition for our attention as much as the bears were. We'll worth it.
Loved this tour. It was just the right length. Had an excellent tour guide. He was knowledgeable and made me feel comfortable.
1) Description said pickup would be at the port but the day before they said we had to make our own way into town. We had selected this tour and paid more specifically because it had port pickup. I questioned this and they firmly refused port pick up and said they were unable to fix the Viator description. The lines for the shuttle to town can get quite long so this was disappointing. After our tour the driver offered to drop people off either in town or at the port, so they can pick up at the port if they feel like it! 2) Minimal narration during the tour. The guide/driver explained a few things but mostly it was just a packed van ride to take you between stops. 3) There was a “service” dog jammed into the van too. Being allergic to dogs this was unpleasant, and without notice or option of taking a different van. The dog also frightened the birds at the raptor center (which had a no dogs sign for obvious reasons) so that made it more difficult to get good photos.
Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear that your experience didn't fully meet your expectations. Regarding pickup, our meeting location depends on the tour time. Most morning tours begin at the cruise dock and end downtown, while our afternoon tours begin downtown so guests have the opportunity to ride the free shuttle in and enjoy Sitka before their tour. On this particular day, yours was an afternoon departure, so the meeting point was Harrigan Centennial Hall, about a 10-minute complimentary shuttle ride from the dock. This information was sent in advance by both email and text, and we encourage guests to read those messages carefully as they contain all meeting details. To avoid shuttle lines, guests are also advised to reserve a shuttle time in advance through the Sitka Dock reservation system. As for the narration, our guides strive to strike a balance between sharing Sitka's history, wildlife, and local stories while also allowing guests to relax and enjoy the scenery. Judging by our many other reviews, most guests find this balance enjoyable, though we understand everyone has different preferences. Finally, regarding the service dog, we are proud to accommodate guests with certified service animals as required. On this tour, the dog was given its own seat in the van for everyone's comfort and had been cleared to visit both the Raptor Center and Fortress of the Bear. We understand that not every guest enjoys sharing space with a service animal, particularly if they have allergies, but we are committed to providing an inclusive experience for all. While we're sorry you felt the dog affected your visit, the facilities welcomed the certified service animal, and we appreciate your understanding. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience. We wish you all the best in your future travels.
Koali contacted me before the trip to confirm everything-Ryan, our driver & guide, was fun & very informative-the trip ran smoothly & to time-thankyou
What a great tour to see the key attractions in Sitka. Koali confirmed arrangements via WhatsApp the day before whilst we were on our cruise ship, and we were picked up directly from the port next day. Syd, our tour guide was fantastic. A local with lots of knowledge and history of the area. We went to the Raptor centre first to see some bald eagles and other birds that had been rescued and rehabilitated, next the National Park too see the totem poles, wildlife and museum, then off to the bear rehab facility which was awesome, plus a stop for pics of the landscape. Finishing with a quick tour of downtown, where we were dropped off. Highly recommended, and much cheaper and seeing more than the ship provided tour. Thanks Koali & Syd!!
