So I arrived a day later in Accra, was more jet-lagged from the extra day of travel, and had trouble getting oriented. All of this did not matter to Auntie K, who patiently took it all in stride with a wonderful sense of humor. She lives Akwaaba! Though we got started late, by the end we had cooked four traditional dishes (eggplant garden egg stew with smoked fish and served on yam, jollof rice, marinated grilled chicken, and fried vegetables). Throughout cooking, Auntie K answered all my many questions about Ghanaian food, techniques, culture. Oh, and the spice/heat level was tremendously good - Auntie K adjusts the level to fit your palette so don't fear the amount of peppers, you learn to expertly cook them such that the heat transforms into flavor. The class was a fantastic introduction to Ghana and Ghanaian cooking and the wonderful people who live here. Her knowledge, skill, and ability to teach are a true gift and I am a better person having received some of it. Thank you K! Auntie K is building a cooking community across the world. Please join her. P.S. I'm glad I brought sunscreen and a hat!
The food was amazing, and the companionship was even better. I really connected with her and she was up and taking her cooking and her passion for food and community.
Auntie KK and family created an incredible, customized, and priceless cooking experience for me. Auntie KK came in on a day when she truly did not have to, to help me learn some new Ghanaian dishes. I assisted alongside her, her husband, and one of her daughters. I truly felt like a part of the family!!! We spent 3.5 hours or so making fufu, palava, chicken light soup, boiled eggs with peppers/onions, and boiled yams. This was everything that I asked for, and Auntie KK delivered. I highly recommend this experience. It's genuine and special, and I've walked away from it learning a bit more about Ghanaian cooking and with new family/friends. The cooking and eating all happen outdoors on a patio area on charcoal fires. This was not an issue at all for me (I loved it!), but if you are sensitive to the heat or sun, you may not enjoy this experience as much.
Awesome home cooking experience! Auntie K made you actually cook not just watch her prepare the dishes. You will definitely leave with an authentic experience.
I had a good experience, Aunti was really welcoming, despite her long distance trip to prepare for the course 2h, but she was there on time, all went well, frankly speaking basically I am semi vegetarian and can eat fish from time to time, she took into consideration all my restrictions, she even came out with a new olive oil bottle as I use only that, and smoked Tuna as I love Tuna. She was miticoulos, and steady. We had all ready on lunch time. Only a remark I would have preferred having the class in a typical traditional Ghanian kitchen within all the traditional habits, spices, dishes, especially that I paid 70eur to eat some vegetables and a Carpi fish 😅, Wish her best luck with other groups, I do recommend her for simple quick meals.
Auntie K (and her special assistant!) provided a wonderful experience in teaching me how to cook. Over three hours, we made light soup with goat meat, grilled chicken, red red, jollof rice, kelewele, fried plantain, and sautéed vegetables. I was given step-by-step instructions for how to recreate the dishes as well. The memories I have to cherish are just as good as the plentiful leftovers from the class. Please take this class - good for solo travelers and groups!
Auntie K and the girls were so nice and the food was delicious. It took longer than expected but we did choose a lot of dishes.
My friend and I had a great time cooking with Auntie KK and her family. They were so kind and gave us words of encouragement as we were cooking. Auntie KK even bought fresh coconut for us. Location was a little tough to find but other people in the community helped us. Make sure you’re prepared for the sun because it was an outdoor cooking experience! The experience felt very personalized. You get to choose what you’d like to cook and also choose how hands on you want to be in the cooking process.
Taylor, thank you so much for coming to cook with me. I truly enjoyed having you and your friend in my home. I loved your energy and how you encouraged each other while cooking—very nice to see 😊. I’m happy you enjoyed the fresh coconut and the outdoor experience; that’s how we do it in the community. Thank you as well for your patience finding the location, and I appreciate you sharing that tip with future guests. It was a joy cooking together, and you are always welcome back anytime you are in Accra. Medaase!
I love, love, love the food and the experience at Auntie K's home. I have had an extended stay in Ghana and every time I eat Ghanaian food at local restaurants- I wish I were eating the food made in my cooking class. I have gone two times to this class and each time the food was excellent. She has a mild personality and a good sense of humor. Very authentic. Jollof Rice / Fried Snapper & Grilled Tilapia / Grilled Chicken / Mixed Vegtables / Bankou / Kelewele over two different classes.
Ei, this review made me smile from ear to ear! Thank you so much for coming back again—it means a lot to me. When someone stays in Ghana for a long time and still prefers my home cooking, then I know I’ve done well 😊. I’m happy you enjoyed the different dishes across both classes—jollof, fish, banku, kelewele… proper Ghana food made with care and patience, just like we do at home. Thank you for appreciating the simplicity, the laughter, and the authenticity. My kitchen will always be open for you anytime you are in Accra. Medaase paa! 🍛💛
My wife and I always book a cooking class when we travel and we were very happy with this option. Auntie K provides clear directions to the meeting point and walks you through the entire process of cooking your dishes. We did not request a specific dish and had Auntie K choose for us. We ended up making jollof Rice and Grilled chicken with boiled plantains and eggs, sauteed cabbage, and greens with smoked tuna. It was hands down the best jollof rice and chicken we had in Accra during our stay and the greens were my favorite out of everything. Be sure to write down the recipe as you cook so you can try to recreate at home. Auntie K was happy to answer any questions we had about the process or anything else that came to mind. You can choose to work as much as you feel like. The process is fulfilling and satisfying to participate and eat. We would recommend to anyone looking to learn how to make local Ghanian dishes at home.
What a joy it was to cook with you both! I loved watching you experience the flavors and take part in every step, from the jollof to the greens. Letting me choose the dishes made the day even more fun, and I’m so happy the meal stood out during your time in Accra. Your enthusiasm, questions, and openness made the cooking experience very special. Thank you for sharing your time and appetite with me. I hope the recipes bring back good memories when you try them again at home. Wishing you safe travels and many more delicious adventures ahead. Auntie KK
