Nothing like we expected

Beautiful scenery...trip of a lifetime BUUUUT....the bus was old and dirty. The music the guide was trying to play wpuldnt play properly so she cut it off. About 10 minutes into the tour, I smelled a strong smell of gasoline. The guide/driver pulled over. There were 2 full gas cand out in the open behind my seat, one of which was leaking. She emptied that can into the tank, leaving the other full can behind us in the bus. I could still smell gasoline throughout the trip. I sat next to a large emergency exit window. One of the 2 latches was broken. I took a video of it as with all the bouncing aroundI figured I might bump into the other latch and fall out..LOL. Since the ride was so rough and bumpy, the loose window rattled quite loudly the entire trip, giving me a monster headache about 2 hours in. When we stopped to order dinner for the ride back we were told they werent preparing anything but cold sandwiches until after Memorial Day so all they could do was 2 varieties of cold sandwiches. Now, I would think a professional tour company who is familiar with the area would have thought to check this ahead of time, but they didn't. The guide started out giving us cool info about the pipeline, and talked about the habitat, etc. After about the first hour and a half she didnt really tell us very much about anything. She did give some explanations aboit the Dalton hwy and Arctic Circle but nowhere near what we expected (slthough she was bragging about the bus having something like 300,000 miles on it) She would answer questions but didnt have her mic on for a fair portion of the trip so we couldn't hear her answers very well. We also came to the conclusion that she was trying to break a record for fastest tour as we felt she was driving too fast for the road conditions causing me to be bounced almost completely out of my seat several times. All in all, it was a big disappointment. The scenery was breathtaking and I realize how lucky I am go have gone to the Arctic Circle, but being that it cost over $1200 for 2 adults and 2 kids to go, I feel like my friend who treated us to this adventure got a little ripped off. They need to update their buses, keeping safety and comfort in mind. You shouldnt have broken emergency exit latches and loose gas cans bouncing around.

To address some of the main concerns you mentioned, the guide was never informed of any of these issues during the tour. Had they been made aware, they could have addressed many of them at the time. The Dalton Highway is an extremely rough road, and occasionally items can come loose due to the conditions. The latch issue was repaired when the vehicle returned, but it also could have been fixed during the trip if the guide had known about it. We carry extra fuel cans because there are long stretches of the Dalton Highway without fuel stations. If the guide had been informed that you were smelling fuel, they would have checked the situation immediately and could have used both fuel cans if necessary. Regarding the vehicle, we intentionally do not use newer Sprinter- or Transit-style vans on the Dalton Highway. While those vehicles may look modern and appealing, they are not well-suited to the harsh road conditions and are more prone to breakdowns. Instead, we use older Ford E-450 vehicles, which are built with all-steel construction and heavy-duty components that have proven to be much more reliable on these roads. Since Ford no longer produces the E-Series in the same way and now focuses on Transit-style vehicles, we invest heavily in maintaining our fleet. We regularly service our vehicles with Ford and H&H and even replace engines when necessary so that we can continue operating the more durable and dependable E-450 platform. As for the speed on the Dalton Highway, the guide's comments were simply meant to explain that road conditions were unusually good that day and that there was a possibility of returning earlier than usual. The vehicle was not speeding, and the tour returned at a normal time. Guest safety is always our highest priority, and we take any concerns about vehicle condition, road safety, or the overall tour experience very seriously. I hope this helps answer your questions. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback.

Great day - long day but worth it!

I would have given this 4.5 if I could have (maybe I can but don't know how). Thoroughly enjoyed the day with Dylan & Sulli (driver in training). The pipelin is amazing & landscape we will never see anywhere else & the excitement of driving on the Dalton Highway. Only comment I would make is it would have been nice to have a explanation of what the day looked like when we were all in the bus. Loves this & would highly recommend it!

Arctic Circle/Northern Lights

Our Arctic circle adventure was an experience of a lifetime. Our guide, Tanner Clause, was funny and entertaining. We can tell that he really loves what he is doing. We felt safe crossing the dangerous rough dirts of Dalton Highway because of him. We reached the Arctic with a beautiful view of the Sunset.Tanner also has good eye of the elusive Aurora or Northern lights. On this trip, we had two good sightings of it and it was spectacular. Thank you Tanner and 1st Alaska Tours/ Tours4Fun. This trip is highly recommended!

Great service

Daniel was a great tour guide. Extremely knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. I was nervous about being on the Dalton Highway and his driving and stories made for a stress free trip. I loved his attention that he paid to all the passengers . He took his time with seeing the lights and taking photos. Ask for Daniel and you will have a great trip. Plus the company was very helpful with arranging and changing plans.

Great Northern lights tour to the Arctic Circle with Tanner

Wow, what a great trip. First we were picked up by our awesome guy Tanner at our hotel in a big comfortable and warm van. Tanner is very knowledgeable about the area. He has lived his entire life in the Fairbanks area so he knows all about this place. He did great narration during the drive as we worked our way up the ice road to the Arctic Circle there were some stops along the way tosee the Alaska pipeline and also to see various scenic spots. Our northernmost stop was above the Arctic Circle. On the way back we had several great stops to view the northern lights. Tanner is really good at finding places to view them and he taught us how best to photograph those northern lights. I highly recommend this tour.

Good But Not Great

Let's start with the Shuttle Van - Old Dirty Stinky (Had fuel containers inside passenger compartment) - uncomofrtable narrow seats (and we are not big people) - and NOISY! Oh my, noisy. 14 hours in that van, be prepared. All the other tours seemed to be in newer Sprinter vans - did not think I would covet a Sprinter Van. The tour company did not appear to coordinate our stop at the Yukon River Camp for seating our group. We were not able to take a break indoors on the southbound ride but the nice folks at the camp accomodated our northbound stop. Tanner was our guide. Very personable and kind. Unfortunately he did not have much to say about the history of the Dalton Highway or the geography of the area as it changed. When asked what kind of bird, there was a flock on the road, he had no idea what type they were (White Tailed Ptarmigan - per the BLM sign we read at the Artice Circle). Our expectation is for more information/local knowledge about places from our guides. All that said, the Northern Lights were spectacular. I would do this tour again but 1st Alaska Tours would not be my first choice of operators.

Artic Circle full day Adventure with Tanner

We had Tanner as our tour guide and driver and I could not recommend anyone better. He was a careful driver explained what we were seeing and even helped set up our IPhones so that we can get excellent pictures of the northern lights. I recommend him highly!!
