It was amazing! The tour doesn't have much description so didn't know what to expect. There is no welcome email so you will learn everything on the go. Here are things that would be helpful to know up front: What to pack: Sleeping bag, sleeping mat, hiking shoes compatible with crampons and good grip on gravel, layers of clothes (it was -7°C at the top, over 20°C in camp - check mountain weather forecast. Good to have extra layer in case you want stop for a moment and enjoy the views), good backpack, sunscreen, power bank (if you want to charge anything over the night in the camp), food for the hike you are used to. You can rent several things if needed (I used theirs sleeping bag, mat, backpack and sun glasses). What is provided: Tent, helmet, lamp, crampons, ice ax. Water. Food - but very basic - instant ramen noodles, fried chicken, and tomato. Pack your own if you want something better. We were not able to reach the summit because it was not possible to cross the glacier. This seems common and might be possible to predict couple of days before depending on the weather. We were quite certain it wont be possible even before heading up (but still packed crampons and ice ax just in case). However that didn't take anything from the experience - the glacier is above 5100m and by the time you reach it you will see some of the best views anyway. First day we have arrived to the La Joya base camp, built tents, went for a short 1h hike to the first viewpoint, and then went to sleep at around 4pm. Alarm set for 11:30pm, with the goal to start hiking around 0:30am. Slower groups started hiking at 10-11pm. We have reached the glacier around 5am, 2 hours before the sun rise (a bit too aggressive pacing, but also wanted to have a buffer in case there would be a slim chance the glacier would be climbable). Then climbed down to Refugio and waited for a sunrise. Going down felt harder than going up, especially the part above Refugio (I was just sliding down). This was essentially a private tour because I was the only person that signed up for this tour on that day.
I want to thank Carlos and Bernardo very much for their incredible work, I went with 3 other friends to climb the Iztaccíhuatl and I want to say that the work is the most professional I have ever lived. From the day we arrived they were very attentive to us, they put up the tents, we did an acclimatization walk and they put up the tents. From the beginning they had the best attitude, they helped us in each moment, giving us tips, suggestions and information in each of the points. Many times we were about to throw in the towel, but they helped, supported us and thanks to them we reached the top of the Iztaccíhuatl. I hope soon to see them again and climb the Peak of Orizaba with them, I highly recommend them.
Bernardo is the man and he runs a great operation! We had an amazing two days on Izta. The views from the top are breathtaking of Popo, the nearby active volcano.
We did 2 hikes on 2 different days with Bernardo, Alan and Alberto. These guys really take very great care of every individual and are amazing guides. Super fun to have done this with them! Highly recommend!!
I live in NYC & wanted a quick trip/rapid ascent of La Malinche & Iztaccihuatl. Carlos was my Guide for La Malnche & Oben was my guide for Iztaccihuatl. Both guys on each ascent were excellent and knowledgeable. Although, I speak Spanish, they both had good English skills and the overall experience was professional and awesome. I made the summit on both mountains and would use Mexico Travesias again in the future.
I booked the two-day Izta summit tour with MT. I was met at the predetermined time by my assigned guide, Johannes. We drove from Condesa to base camp of Izta (about a 1.5-2 hour drive). We set up tents before doing a 3-hour hike around base camp. We returned for dinner and sleep around 5/6pm. We then woke up at 12am to start hiking at 1am. The whole area was gorgeous, with amazing views of Izta and it’s sister Popocatepetl. We made it to summit, and returned to the car around 2-3pm. The experience was equally rewarding and challenging - it required a great deal of mental and physical stamina, especially dealing with altitude and sleep deprivation. Johannes had a load of gear for me, including: tent, pad, sleeping bag, helmet, head lamp, hiking poles, crampons, ice axe, harness and backpack. I’d brought the vast majority of my own gear, and I would recommend bringing a camping pillow and a sleeping bag rated to -20 degrees C (and a sleeping pad unless you’re fine to rest on a yoga mat). Johannes himself was a great guide who spoke English, Spanish and German, and he was an experienced mountaineer. I felt safe with him (not only in regards to technical mountaineering aspects, but also as a solo female traveler). He was very patient and regularly checked in to make sure I was ok. My only critique of the experience is in regards to the lead up: I booked the experience, and received a confirmation email, but I would’ve appreciated a follow up email that detailed the experience, and what to bring, and how to pack it (eg I didn’t know if I could pack my gear in a suitcase or a backpacking backpack). I also didn’t know we’d be staying in tents nor the elevation gain/milage. Furthermore, I’d emailed MT to ask these questions and let them know I was a vegetarian, and received no response. Johannes was unaware of my dietary preferences (because whomever was monitoring the company email either overlooked my email or disregarded it) and all the meals sent with him were with meat.
Great people, the guides are super friendly and have great experience. They put our safety ahead of anything, which made the experience a lot more enjoyable
It was amazing everything! Although we didn’t make it to the summit, it was an experience that left me speechless 👌🏼👌🏼
