All well with our trip to the salt flat of Uyuni from san pedro de atacama, the inns in Bolivia met the basic requirements to rest in the night, the meals were delicious and our guide Jorge made the trip pleasant and enjoyable.
Long story short, the nature and the salt flats are incredible and you should absolutely go see them. However, although I was prepared for a bare bones experience, the key issues for my review are listed below in order of importance: 1. You barely spend any time at the salt flats (compared to the stories I heard from friends that booked other tours). After a long and difficult few days you finally arrive at the salt flats. We spent 1 hour for sunrise, then let’s say a second hour because for breakfast you can leave the table to walk outside and view the flats, and then only 1 hour of hanging out to take different types of pictures. Salaar de Uyuni is a photographer’s dream and that hour flies by since our group was helping one another get fun shots—I’m not sure if anyone left with anything great. We were rushed to finish up at the flats just to go spend an hour at souvenir shops in a nearby town, and then we sat around for 2 hours for a lunch! Lunch only took about 30 minutes to eat but we simply sat there for most of the afternoon. Then we headed to the company office and hit the road. We arrived at our hotel well before sunset as well. It was sort of a "hurry up and wait" theme that the tour would quickly pass things everyone wanted to see in order to get to other places to sit around. 2. Uncoordinated day 1. I was told to be ready outside at 5:45am and was not picked up until about 7:15am (I was later told they forgot about me -- luckily I contacted the company just in time for the driver to come back). I'll spare you the entire narrative but, from pickup, it took about 7 hours to cross the border. This is because the company paired our early pick-up group with others that were picked up from hotels/hostels much later in the morning. In other words, I was ready at 5:45am to be picked up at 7:15am to then just to sit and wait for hours at the border for other group members to arrive. I understand logistical planning can't be perfect but this was extreme and our entire car was frustrated. Therefore, amazing nature and a world class place to visit, but it was quite unorganized. The hotels/food/bathroom situations were all expected so the condition of those did not play a factor into my review.
Thank you for your detailed feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the breathtaking Uyuni Salt Flats! We sincerely apologize for the rushed schedule and the coordination issues on day 1. Your comments will help us improve timing and logistics for future tours. Safe travels, The Howlanders Team
Good trip. We passed by beautiful places and our driver-guide, Vicente Castro, was exceptional, score 10. But the journey is very long and exhausting, the roads are terrible and the hotels and their meals leave much to be desired, especially the Hostal Las Torres, in which we spent two nights.
— Howlanders Team
We went through get my guide with a company called Anglo vision travel. This was booked months in advance and the night before they told us they had no English speaking guide😡 We were travelling as 5 friends and 6 people were stashed into a Toyota 4x4 2 having to go on the small seats at the back for up to 10 hours a day. 2 of our group are 6ft 2 so this was a challenge, Rena our guide was fab but spoke no English so communication was difficult. We didn’t realise that the border crossings were going to be such hardwork and took hours and hours so be prepared. This is not the agents fault but something we didn’t factor in. The agent changed the itinerary without informing us and we missed out on one area we thought we were going. Accommodation was terrible we stayed 2 nights in a terrible unfriendly place and didn’t eat for 2 days. If you book this trip check with any agent the names of the accommodation and where it is. Highlight is sunrise at the salt flats we were so far away that we had to get up at 3 to get there when there is much nicer accommodation in Uyuni. On the last day a new driver was given to us to take us to the Border. He was rude and his vehicle was dangerous with bits falling off it as we drove. He had personal call which turned into an argument and he had to pull over. He provided breakfast for us on the last day which we could not eat as stale. He really didn’t care. Avoid this company but don’t miss out on this really special experience but be prepared it is not for the faint hearted as you are travelling across dessert toads for hours. Take snacks as good not great.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re very sorry to hear that several aspects of the tour — especially the last-minute guide change, vehicle space, accommodation, and final transfer — did not meet your expectations. We completely understand how frustrating that must have been. Traveling across the Uyuni desert involves long drives and demanding conditions, but the organizational and communication issues you mention are not the experience we aim to provide. We will share your feedback with the local operator, Anglo Vision Travel, to review what happened. We’re glad sunrise at the Salar de Uyuni was a highlight, and we truly appreciate your honest and helpful advice for future travelers. Kind regards, Howlanders Team
When I traveled to Peru in 2025, I hired a few packages for Viator and I really liked it. But in January 2026, on my trip to San Pedro do Atacama (Chile) and the Salar de Uyuni (Bolivia), my experience with Viator was very bad. First, the tour I booked on Booking.com was cancelled 2 days before, with no option to resume it. I ended up hiring the tour for a competitor. But the biggest problem was the change of the trip to Salar de Uyuni, scheduled for 12/01. Two days before the partner operator Howlanders sent the message: “...the reason for our contact is because due to the inconveniences that are happening in Bolivia it is very difficult to load fuel so that the reservation is subject that this can be carried out. In case of no power, you can modify the reservation on the 13th day. We remain available for any consultation.” Indeed, the Bolivian government cut off fuel subsidies and that problem was happening. However, I had a whole trip planning and delaying one day would change my whole schedule. As a journalist, I went to listen to other people and agencies who were selling packages to Salar de Uyuni. I interviewed 15 people from different agencies in San Pedro do Atacama. There was, yes, the difficulty of fuel supply. But they all had the dates kept. However, Estrella del Sur, which would transport 4x4 to Bolivia, had not continued to supply its cars. I mean, there was a lack of planning on their part, since the others were honouring the agenda. After talking a few times with the staff of Estrella del Sul, at his agency in San Pedro do Atacama, the possibility of making the trip to Salar de Uyuni changed to 14/01, which would compromise my flight back to Brazil. I had to argue a lot with them and asked my money back to try to hire a quick tour to Salar de Uyuni. The push-push game started. Estrella del Sur said that the refund would be made by Howlanders, who transferred this responsibility to Viator, should make the refund by credit card. But without a fixed date. I had bought this package with Viator in August/25. Someone had received my money and I had to try to buy on 11/01 a package to travel on 12/01, as planned. I started complaining with the manager of Estrella del Sul and asked him for an urgent solution. It was 11/01 and I needed to follow the planning of the trip. After a lot of irritation and protesting against the attitudes of the agencies involved, he called a partner agency, Aventura Travel, who managed to put me in a group that would follow the trip on 12/01. The Estrella de Sur transferred my package to them and solved the payment issue. The trip with the Aventura Travel was excellent. The only problem I had was that I paid to have a private room and ended up staying in a shared environment. If I depended on Viator and the Howlanders I would not have traveled to Salar de Uyuni. I think Viator needs to better select its partners and not leave the traveler in hand. My score for the Viator this time is zero.
Lamentamos muito o inconveniente que você enfrentou durante a viagem. Para que possamos analisar o seu caso com mais detalhes, por favor entre em contato conosco pelo chat da Viator. Estamos à disposição para ajudar e buscar a melhor solução.
Overall, amazing sight seeing but the rest of the tour was pretty miserable. I paid $400 dollars, which got me bologna and cheese sandwiches for lunch and soup and plain pasta for dinner. All of the hostels were in pretty bad shape. I don’t know what they’re using all the money they get per person on, because everything was low quality. There is also efficiency issues, they want you to wake up super early all the time, but then we get to our destinations, and then have to wait for multiple hours. For example, waking up at 3:30am to get back to San Atacama, but then once at the border, they open late so we had to wait 2 hours. The sight seeing was amazing, but I just wish they used the profits from this tour to improve the conditions of the overall tour.
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the incredible landscapes of the Uyuni Salt Flats. At the same time, we’re sorry that aspects such as the meals, accommodations, and organization did not meet your expectations. As this tour takes place in very remote areas, services are basic, but we understand your concerns and have shared your comments with the local operator to help improve the experience. We appreciate your honest review and thank you for taking the time to share it. Kind regards, The Howlanders.com Team
Absolutely incredible experience overall, can’t recommend any higher. Some logistical notes: - You will not have cell service for basically the whole trip. Occasionally the hotels will have wifi, but it is not good - You need to get ~300 Bolivianos before you arrive, as there are mandatory tickets you must purchase in Bolivanos. I did not see any currency exchange places. You will need to purchase water (outside of meals), wifi, and bathroom access as well. - The tour company on the Chilean side is different (but related?) to the company on the Bolivian side - you will have different drivers. They make an effort to group passengers by similar nationalities, so you have others in your group that speak the same language. Our drivers spoke very limited English, but luckily we had multiple bilingual passengers in our car - The accommodations are very basic The first two days are primarily driving with many scenic stops. Each driver will have a slightly different itinerary (some own their cars and can make their own stops, others use a company car with a mandatory itinerary) The final day is all at the Uyuni salt flat. It was great, but honestly, the first two days of the trip were the highlight for me. overall incredible and I highly recommend.

We went to Salar de Uyuni from San Pedro de Atacama with Cruz Andina. Our driver Marcelo was great, he was attentive to everything. The trip is a sight. Wonder after wonder.

The nature is incredible! Ower first driver Ramiro was great! But in the first hostel there is not hot wather in the shower. In the Last Day we have problems with the second driver Ariel who apears to take us two hours later and he was drank. We also have problems whit the car because it brakes in the midle of way. The agency Estrela del Sur could solve this problem and help us.
The Howlanders.com team appreciates your feedback. We hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!
4,086 sq mi Salar de Uyuni is almost 10 times of New York City! It is magnificent! I waited there for the sunrise, and got some amazing scenery on my phone, I just looked what I saw.
The team at Howlanders.com would like to thank you for your kind review. Have a safe trip!
