Amazing!!!

It was amazing! The self guided tour was beautiful, I really enjoyed that I could get in at the falls. The horseback experiencer was well worth it!!! The horses know what and where they doing/going. The guide pointed out things. Amazing way to unplug for sure! It was recommend to me by other travelers, not sad that I listened to them!

Hiking poles are helpful....

Hiking poles are helpful. There is not a lot of time to hang out in the water by the waterfalls but we enjoyed about a 15 minute stop. We didn't go to waterfall 4. Trail is well maintained, horses were cared for. Overall, one of our favorites!

Perfect Costa Rican hiking experience!

My family of 3 (husband, wife, and 12 year old daughter) enjoyed the waterfalls and felt the hike was just the right length.

Beautiful and Tough

This was a beautiful 2.5 - 3hr hike, but you do it without a guide and some areas were a bit tough. I did take a painful tumble but thankfully was able to continue. If it would have been any worse, I would have been left behind while my husband went for help. The thought of that scared me more than the fall. Having a guide, they could have called for help if needed.

Quite good

After being on some rainforest guided tours, an unguided tour isn't so fun. Tour mentions snacks are included but only got lunch 🤷‍♀️ Also it wasn't so clearly mentioned that it will be just me , walking in the forest. Other than that it was okay. Lunch was good, horseback riding - amazing - and the guide with the horses was really sweet.

A++ Rainforest and 10 Waterfalls

My husband and I took this self guided tour in the Monteverde Rainforest. We had a 3 hour drive from Tamarindo to meet our guide at the Monteverde Lodge. Our tour guide Mauricia picked us and others up and drove us to the start of our hike. The hike started at 9:30 and we checked in at a registration counter and gave our choice of protein for lunch (Chicken, Beef, Pork). We had signed up for the horseback ride out but were given an opportunity to choose 4x4 transportation back for lunch. We chose this option and boy are we glad we did. It rained on the people on horseback and the guides had to go slow because of children and they missed lunch and had to get it to go. They showed us a map and advised there would be 3 check points with guides with walkie talkies. The rainforest was indescribable! The green thick forest was beautiful as were the 10 waterfalls. The trails weren’t really difficult just muddy and wet so you need to watch your steps. There is quite a bit of up and down climbing so be prepared although we are in our 70’s and made it just fine. There are several suspension bridges you must cross one at a time. At station 3 they radioed ahead that we would be taking the 4x4. A group of us were driven back to the cafe where we had a traditional meal (protein, white rice, salad). with your choice of juices, coffee, water. We got some great photos of the landscape and clouds. They have a gift store downstairs. After lunch, we met up with Mauricia who drove us back to the Monteverde Lodge where we changed into dry clothes we had left in our car. Don’t miss this beautiful hike. Well worth the cost. Make sure to wear hiking boots and a raincoat or poncho and enjoy!

Rainy, Wild and Worth Every Minute

This was such a cool experience, even on a rainy, wet day. We did the wild trekking first, and it truly lived up to its name. It was wild, wet, and very muddy. We did not realize ahead of time just how messy it would be, but honestly that would not have stopped me from signing up. It made the whole thing feel more adventurous and real. Walking through the mud, hearing the rain hit the forest, and feeling completely surrounded by nature was such a grounding experience. The waterfalls were beautiful. The rain made everything feel even more lush and dramatic. The sound of the water echoing through the trees felt powerful and calming at the same time. Even though we were soaked, it felt worth it. Horseback riding was a first for me, and I loved it. My horse, Spanky, was so calm and steady. He made me feel comfortable right away, even though I was nervous. Riding through the green, misty forest felt peaceful in a completely different way than the trek. The weather could have easily felt like a downside, but it honestly made the day feel more alive. If you go in ready for nature to be raw and unpredictable, you will appreciate it so much more. It was muddy, rainy, and a little challenging at times, but it was also rewarding and memorable. I am really glad we did it.

Awesome experience!

This was an awesome experience that really encompassed what CR is all about! We enjoyed the self guided aspect of the walking portion, and the multiple waterfalls you can swim in. We finished the tour off with the horses and it was a blast. The guide followed us from behind, but let us control the speed and direction of the horses so they weren’t “holding our hands.” Only thing I would add is we were coming from Jaco area (2.5-3 hours away) and if you do, use a car with 4x4 and large tires to combat the mountains and gravel roads to get to the tour.
