We had a FANTASTIC time on the ghetto tour. Micaela is an outstanding tour guide and a very special person. She has extensive knowledge, personal history and a superb sense of humor. This tour was the highlight of our Rome visit. I give it my highest recommendation.
This tour was my highlight of my trip to Italy with my family! The tour was very engaging for my entire family ranging from me (21 year old), to my youngest brother (11 years old). I strongly recommend booking your tour with Micaela Pavoncello if possible. Shes an amazing guide and her knowledge of Jewish history in Rome is incredible!! I learned more from this tour then in a collage course!!
I have rarely felt as ripped off as I did aft Before I begin, I want to be clear that I knew the price in advance. My disappointment is not that the tour was expensive. It is that the experience fell dramatically short of what I reasonably expected for that price. I assumed, quite wrongly, that this would be a once in a lifetime experience led by a Jewish historian, scholar or someone with substantial expertise in both the history of Rome's Jewish community and Jewish history more broadly. Unfortunately, the warning signs were there from the beginning. The communication during the booking process was poor, bordering on disrespectful. I repeatedly had to follow up just to get responses. When the owner, Micaela Pavoncello, did reply, her emails often came across as though she was doing me a favor by allowing me to book the tour. The tone was strange and unprofessional and it left me with an uneasy feeling before the tour even began. In hindsight, I should have listened to that instinct. The tour itself was led by an architect named Sara whose primary connection to Jewish Rome appears to be her family's history in the community. She was a pleasant enough person and parts of the tour were mildly interesting. However, this was not the level of expertise I expected based on the price and marketing. I was hoping for a deep, scholarly exploration of Jewish life in Rome, its historical significance and its place within the broader Jewish experience. Instead, what I received felt more like a general neighborhood walk with some personal and historical anecdotes. To make matters worse, the tour was advertised as lasting three hours but actually lasted only about two hours and fifteen minutes. The only way to reach the advertised duration would be to include time spent inside the Great Synagogue and admission to the synagogue was not even included in the tour price. We had to pay that fee separately. What leaves me genuinely stunned is the value proposition. I can understand paying a premium for exceptional expertise, exclusive access or a truly memorable educational experience. This was none of those things. The guide was pleasant, but the tour simply did not deliver anything close to what its price and marketing suggested. I am honestly shocked that this operation can charge what it does for what amounts to a relatively brief walking tour with a guide whose qualifications are far different from what many visitors would reasonably expect. In the end, I didn't leave feeling enlightened or inspired. I left wondering how I had paid so much for so little. That is a disappointing feeling, especially in a city as historically rich and fascinating as Rome.
We had a lovely tour of the great synagogue, museum, and Jewish ghetto with Dafna, who was fantastic with our kids (ages 10-13). They were quite tired already by the start of our tour but she did a fantastic job keeping them engaged and letting them sit down/prioritizing AC. Dafna had many stories about the Jewish history and Jewish community of Rome, including personal family stories. Highly recommend!
Excellent presentation of the Jewish Ghetto and Synagogue. Guide was very informative. Easy walking on tour
This tour is excellent for history buffs and to learn of Jewish Heritage in Rome. There was entry into the temple and the Jewish Museum. The guide, Yael, was excellent, informative and answered questions and was personable.
Outstanding tour. Mikol was extremely knowledgeable.
My partner and I really looked forward to this tour. But 250€ ($300!) later, we feel totally scammed! And we both agree it was an overpriced waste of 2.5 hours… and a fistful of money! We toured the Jewish Ghetto in Venice for $17/person. And this outfit charges $125/person! And then - insult to injury - they require that we pay for our own entry to the museum/synagogue. We learned paltry little and left feeling resentful and stupid for not realizing we’d been totally duped. My advice? Pay for the museum and synagogue - that’s a good cause. But avoid signing on to this tour and giving $100s of dollars to this outfit. You won’t learn anything and will regret your decision if you do.
So much to learn about Jewish history in Rome & Yael was so knowledgeable
Sara was very knowledgeable and interesting. The tour had the right amount of information and was a good length.
