My biggest advice before doing this tour—especially for women—is to be very mindful of what you wear. For La Leona, wear very secure swimwear. The current can be incredibly strong. I wore fitted swim pants and a rash guard, and I could still feel the current trying to pull my pants down. My cousin’s pants actually came halfway down, and we heard about other visitors whose bikini pieces came off in the current. I would strongly recommend a secure one-piece swimsuit or one-piece rash guard, preferably with a zipper and sleeves. I was also glad I wore pants because even with them, I ended up with some bruising on my knees. Footwear is just as important. I would recommend either good-quality water/trail shoes or tennis shoes that you don’t mind getting completely soaked and beat up. I wore Salomon Solamphibian trail/water shoes with water socks, and I was very comfortable hiking in them. They protected my feet well from the rocks, branches, and uneven terrain. My family wore more basic water shoes, and they could feel a lot more of the rocks and branches underneath their feet. Even though my Salomons fit securely, the current was so strong that at times I could feel the water trying to pull them off. Thankfully, none of us lost our shoes. As for the tour itself, this was easily the most memorable and adrenaline-filled experience of our Costa Rica trip. We started at Pozo de los Coyotes, which was the calmest part of the day. It was beautiful, peaceful, and relaxing. We floated around in inner tubes and enjoyed the scenery before heading to La Leona. Our tour was essentially private—just my family and our guide, Sebastian—which was really nice because we received a lot of individual attention. The actual hike to La Leona Waterfall wasn’t particularly difficult. There are caves, stairs/ladders, rocks, and uneven terrain, but the hike itself wasn’t what made this experience challenging. The water was the challenging part. Right before reaching La Leona, you have to go through a narrow section where the current can be extremely strong. Apparently, there had been rain in another area that made the current particularly strong the day we went. We saw people from other tours coming through who looked like they had been hit by a bus! Even several very fit, well-built men were having a hard time getting through the current. My cousin wasn’t able to get through that section, and initially I couldn’t either. I eventually made it through by climbing along the wall of the canyon using the rails and footholds that are installed there. Sebastian guided me on where to step and what to grab onto while I made my way across. It was intense, but I made it safely. I would definitely recommend asking your guide how strong the current is that day so you know what you’re getting into. The difficulty can really depend on the water conditions. I don’t know how to swim, but I wore the provided life jacket throughout the water portion. After La Leona, we visited Llanos de Cortés Waterfall, which was also beautiful, and we even got to see an owl. One of my favorite touches came at the end of the tour. Sebastian had recorded parts of our experience throughout the day and put together a video for us. I absolutely loved it. It’s something I will treasure forever and such a great way to remember what ended up being one of the biggest highlights of my trip. Overall, this tour was beautiful, exciting, challenging, and very adrenaline-driven. La Leona was much more intense than I expected because of the current that day, but that’s also what made the experience so memorable. I would absolutely do this tour again. Just come prepared, wear the right clothing and shoes, and know that the water conditions can completely change the level of difficulty.

Arturo was awesome. Super friendly, knowledgeable about Costa Rica and the world at large making even the drive between stops enjoyable. The waterfalls were beautiful and lunch was great too. As an added bonus, Arturo took photos and videos of the whole thing for us! We highly recommend.

Incredible experience. We started with the lazy river and then hiked to three waterfalls, each were magical, and all three were very different. We saw iguanas, monkeys, owls, and the most beautiful water hidden in the tropics of Costa Rica. Nancy, our guide, was amazing, patient, and full of great information. Very happy with our experience.

This was a great adventure. Plan for a very active day with rewarding views at each location. Lunch was delicious.

This trip was amazing one that you have to experience in person. Out your guide was very knowledgeable and very attentive. He made you feel very safe.

Alejandro was a great guide. Very personable and made our family of four comfortable and feeling well attended to. La Leona was the best out of the three waterfalls but is for adventure seekers only. I would suggest those with any mobility or physical limitations to consider a different trip. Our family included teens but we did see families with kids who were helped along with other tour guides. All in all, a great experience and lifetime memories were made.

Amazing tour, our guide Sebastin was very friendly and knowledgable! I highly recommend this tour, every spot they took us was amazing and the video we received was a perfect memory of our incredible trip! This is a must do trip, worth every dollar!

Carlos was an amazing guide! This was the highlight of our trip to Costa Rica. We did little to no research on the waterfalls we were going to but we were so pleasantly surprised! The first stop Poza Los Coyotes was so beautiful and crystal blue water. We got to do a lazy river experience here, which was a great way to ease into the day. La Leona was definitely the highlight and was quite the adventure to get to but we felt safe the entire time. Make sure to bring water shoes, regular hiking shoes will not cut it! We got lucky as it was not crowded at all. Carlos explained that sometimes you have to wait a very long time to even get to the waterfall. After the hike to La Leona we had the most delicious local Costa Rican meal with rice, beans, chicken, and fried plantain. The final waterfall we visited was very chill and quiet. We saw howler monkeys, iguanas, bats, frogs all long our journey. Each waterfall was extremely unique from the other. Carlos documented our whole journey and made sure to send us all the photos and videos at the end. Would definitely recommend this 8 hour excursion to get a good taste of the waterfalls Costa Rica has to offer!

Our excursion with Carlos was absolutely incredible. The tubing and cliff jumping/rope swinging into the lagoon was so much fun. The second trip which included a jungle hike (we saw howler monkeys, snakes, and iguanas) and swimming through a raging river in a cave to one of the most beautiful waterfalls we’ve ever seen was like nothing we’ve ever done before. Our local lunch was peaceful and delicious before the final hike and massive waterfall. We enjoyed free coconut water and story after story from our guide Carlos, who made sure we had as authentically local of a trip as possible. He also provided water, tea, beer, snacks, and stopped for bathrooms/quick shops whenever we asked. Carlos could not have been a more fun or knowledgeable guide - if you are considering booking this excursion, do it. There is zero chance you will regret it. Pura Vida!
