3 day hiking tour

zakaria was a really helpful guide who was always willing to answer out questions! there was some confusion about which tour i was about to be led to at the start, but likely a problem of his company, not him. he has a special sense of humor (that takes some getting used to) and always watched out for our safety. i thank him for a successful trip!

Poorly organised and disappointing experience

The pre tour communication was very stressful and was still trying to confirm the tour and pick up point at 10pm the night before. I had asked whether we should take sleeping bags and were told bedding would be provided. This was in fact 2 polyester blankets which was not ideal as the guest houses do not have heating at all so very cold at night in Spring. All facilities are exceptionally basic. Not a problem in itself but the guest house on second night was unpleasantly dirty. The guest houses do not provide food so we had a 'cook' come with us, but food was very basic. I did see the food another couple had with a different tour company and it looked much better. Our guide was 19 and either did not understand English well and/ or did not listen. He didn't really engage with us at all or give us any local information. Also he wasn't capable of gauging our ability and adapting the hike for us at all. More upfront communication on routes/ elevations would have been ideal. Be aware the paths are very rocky, often combined with shingle and narrow in places, with fairly tough ascents and descents but thankfully we're relatively experienced hikers so coped. Might be considered tough for less experienced. The net result was that we didn't really feel looked after and think the hiking could have possibly been much more enjoyable with a different tour operator/ route/ accommodation/ food. Value for money was poor as it wasn't cheap. On the upside we were fortunate to have clear weather which helped make the days more pleasant.

Fun and Beautiful Adventure Hike in the Atlas Mountains

My two friends and I booked a three-day hike in the Atlas Mountains. We did not expect it to be so wonderful. The transportation from Marrakech was easy, and people were communicative. Once we got to Imlil, we met our guide, Zakaria. Zakaria was our guide for the three-day hike in the Atlas Mountains. He was very informative, generous with his time, and knowledgeable about the area and its people. Zakaria was accommodating of our dietary restrictions and truly worked around the clock to make us all feel comfortable.

Amazing trip ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a fantastic trip! Kamal our tour guide was the perfect guy to show us his mountain. He was considerate and very knowledgable and took us on a great route. We were very lucky with the weather. For me I am an experienced hiker but my girlfriend is a beginner and we both found it very enjoyable. She said it was one of the highlights of her life!

Wonderful atlas!

Amazing. Stunning scenery, local experiences and a real insight into Berber life. Great value. Requires a more than average level of fitness and confidence in rough terrain. Pretty basic food but that’s part of the charm and didn’t go hungry. Maybe take your own travel towel as this wasn’t provided. Hiking times a bit too generous. Our guide Hussein was great. A true local, from the atlas and knew it like the back of his hand. Friendly, open and very helpful. Also, take as little luggage as you can and leave most behind in Marrakech if possible. Highly recommend.

Very good experience in the mountains

Overall, a fantastic experience and easily the highlight of our trip to Morocco. Pros: The mountain scenery is stunning, and the routes strike a great balance—challenging enough to feel rewarding without being exhausting. Our guide, Houssain, was knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. Food is simple rather than restaurant-quality, but it’s hearty, high-carb, and exactly what you need for trekking. The guesthouses are decent (if a bit basic) and can get cold at night, so bring plenty of layers. We were also lucky to have a friendly group, which really added to the experience. Cons: Communication beforehand was poor. We only received the pick-up details at 10:30pm the night before, and there was conflicting information about luggage, which led to an unnecessary trip back to Marrakech. The “private tour” description is misleading—we ended up in a group of 13, which wasn’t clear on Tripadvisor. This also caused issues with timing. We’d confirmed in advance that we could finish early to catch a flight, but our guide wasn’t aware and said he needed to prioritise the group, suggesting we should have booked private if timing mattered. That was frustrating given what we’d been told. In the end, timings worked out, but it easily could have gone wrong. Finally, the operator had indicated there would be two guides for a group of this size, but we only had one. When someone injured their ankle, there was no option to split the group, so we had to slow down significantly. This could have been resolved with more appropriate planning from the tour operator. Overall: Definitely worth booking—you’ll likely have a great time once the trek starts. Just go in expecting disorganised communication and a group (not private) experience.

Must do when in Morocco!

Trekking in the Atlas mountains was one of the best things we did while in Morocco. Thanks to our guide Houssain who grew up in the mountains and has walked these paths since he was a child you see the Berber villages and nature with different eyes learning a lot more about the Atlas lifestyle then we would have thought. You stay in authentic homestays, eat berber meals, enjoy the evenings drinking tea with your group. Strongly recommend the 3-day hike as two days is to short leaving you wanting more. For the beginning of march: bring extra layers (fleece, hardsheel, downjacket, beanie were great), hiking boots for ankle coverage, water can be bought on day 1 as well as toilettpaper, own towel needed. Do not recommend the tour for people with fear of hights, or lack of sure-footedness. Extra luggage can be left savely in Imlil which is great to continue your trip afterwards. One think to mention though: communication with Marrakesh day trips (the guides are hired by them, it is not them your contacting) is difficult and slow, leaving you waiting for days or replying not at all. Meat up point was confirmed late in the evening a day before the tour. You later get contacted by another number who turns out to be the bus drivers who you then give the pick up point to since he himself didn‘t get the information by the company himself till 30 minutes before pick up. Definetly something to work on.

Lovely days in fantastic landscape

From high mountain passes with snow to lush valleys. Small nice villages with friendly people. Mohammed is a really skilled and pleasant guide. The chef makes good, fresh food - pastasalat, lentils, tagine, couscous. The route can be challenging - steep paths with loose rocks and streams to cross - requires good shoes and gives sore legs 😁 We had full sun and lush weather in February (on the day). Practical info: We got our pickup time to know by even calling the evening before. Remember towel and very warm clothes for the night. Warm socks! Don’t expect the mule to carry a lot of your luggage, it’s mostly for food and kitchen utensils.

Highlight of our trip to Morocco and a must if you enjoy hiking

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys hiking and escaping the chaos of big cities. This was easily the highlight of our Morocco trip. Thankfully, everything went very smoothly—although at one point it didn’t seem like it would. There was a minor communication issue when confirming the pickup location, as I didn’t hear back from the agency at first, but after a few messages late the night before, everything was sorted and we were on our way—and we’re so glad we went. Our guides were fantastic and handled changes outside of our control with ease, including weather that temporarily closed the trail on day two. By the following morning, we were able to continue as planned (rather than turning back), and it turned into a great hike through scenic valleys and across various peaks of the Atlas Mountains, passing through several small Berber villages along the way. We opted for the 3-day trek (which I’d recommend), though most of our group did 2 days and one person did 4. Throughout the trip, we were well fed with breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and plenty of tea. We were never hungry, and the food was satisfying and hit the spot. The villages we stayed in all had small shops where you could buy water or snacks, so there’s no need to carry too much from the start. Just remember to bring your own towel if you plan to shower, along with toilet paper and a book for some downtime in the evenings. As fairly seasoned hikers, we didn’t find anything particularly strenuous, but the routes and views were top-notch and the experience was incredibly memorable overall.
