I belong to South Kolkata. The places visited are known to me ... but the information regarding these places shared by Avik was something which I was not aware. Avik's indebth knowledge regarding the cultural background of Kolkata was commendable. The food was excellent and delightful... Avik was found quite knowledgeable in this area too.
The experience with Avik was both sensory and cerebral. The fact that our tour happened at the onset of Durga Puja only heightened the mood and vibrancy. Each mouth watering dish was followed by another mouth watering dish and Avik’s knowledge of the food items and how they were prepared was consummate. Also his panache for sharing the cultural and social history of Kolkata was well received and there were lots of I did not know that moments. So thank you Avik for deepening and extending my knowledge. On a personal note thank you for indulging us and me for partaking in more than a glass of Shorbot. A high moment and most satisfying. Highly recommend this tour.
Avík was an energetic and knowledgeable guide. The tour is as much about the people and the city as it is the food - I learned so much and enjoyed talking to him, walking the streets of the old Kolkata, and learning so much about the city. But the food was excellent too - the real deal Kolkata street food. I especially liked the mutton, the Kolkata take on fish and chips, the fired mango, and the sweets! Come hungry and be ready to ride the metro and local bus and to cross busy streets and to keep up with Arvik, who is quite fleet of foot!
This food tour was absolutely amazing. Our tour guide, Avek, was knowledgeable not only about all the foods we tried but also Kolkata and India as a whole. He made the most experience truly immersing Indian culture and cuisine. Throughout the tour we felt, safe, welcomed truly a part of the culture. It was the experience of a lifetime and I would recommend this tour to anyone traveling to Kolkata.
Avik’s unique tour involves many food and drink stations, 3 modes of transport, history lessons and cultural stops that you would never see if you just kept to the touristy area around Park Street. Avik’s tour starts at a busy metro station which was very busy and a little hard to find the rendezvous, then you weave through crowds and shops into the station and Avik guides you onto the metro to the Kurmitoli area of the city. From there it is a whirlwind of senses and history for nearly 4 hours. We had amazing paratha, goat curry, fruit, and ice cream, saw some of the oldest buildings in the city, watched craftsman melt gold and make milk sweets over huge furnaces. Avik was a brilliant tour guide on a route that he has designed himself and refined over 10+ years. It was great seeing him interact with old friends and acquaintances the whole way through.
The experience of this outing is just as described only better! It is a night in Kolkata tasting food and infused with insightful history of the city. The food was safely prepared and delicious! The tour guide was easily able to accommodate my vegetarian preferences. We had the most delicious mango lassi ever! The opportunity to ride the different modes of transportation was exciting and unrivaled. We learned the history of parts the city we didn’t know existed. Avik is passionate about the city, its food, its history and culture. This shines thru in the enthusiastic was he explained everything. Excellent street food tour by Avik, having a really knowledgeable guide made the experience uniquely engaging. The gap between each food stop was filled with historic and cultural references that Avik explained really well. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it and could easily be one of the most satisfying food tours we've had, both for the belly and the mind.
