My advice before you make this trip, make sure YOU CAN DO A COUCH TO 5K., There is a lot of walking. You do get to see a lot both of old Japan and the new cities, but as 2 x 65 yr old's we found the walking a bit hard to cope with .At some of the older temples there are a LOT of steps to climb. It would be silly of me to tell you what we thought are the best bits of this trip, as each person has their own ideas, but overall, its a trip worth doing

Lack of support from tour company
A friend and I went on a 15 day tour with Inspiring Vacations. This company does not support customers and would rather take the word of a transfer company. We were not met by pre-paid for transport and did everything we could on arrival to find our driver - to no avail. It was late and we were tired so we caught a taxi. This meant that we paid double i.e $500 for our trip into Osaka. Inspiring vacations was not helpful despite all their claims in their advertising.
Three other couples on our tour had similar problems with transfers.

Our experience with Wayfairer Travel
We chose Wayfairer Travel to plan our two week trip to Japan as their reviews were quite good,; we however were quite disappointed.
Before our trip I emailed our "luxury travel concierge" twice asking her simple questions regarding electrical converters necessary in Japan and clothing etiquette for the Japanese shrines. I initially did not hear anything; after two more emails I eventually did receive very vague responses.
More importantly; we were told that we would receive our final detailed trip itinerary a month before our departure date. Four weeks out and no itinerary. After several calls and emails we did eventually receive our itinerary of which several of the scheduled excursions were not executed and a a hotel reservation was changed after we got the final itinerary and we ended up at the wrong hotel!
I would definitely not recommend Wayfairer Travel .

Gate1 doesn't have any customer service
I have taken four enjoyable trips with Gate1, but my last one to Japan was my worst, because their customer service is non-existent. The price of our trip increased by several hundred dollars, when the air portion of the trip was cancelled and then re-added. Our travel agent stated that she never received the email message from Gate1, asking whether we still wanted the air portion of our trip (why wouldn't we?) and quickly cancelled it to save money, when she didn't respond to that message (that she never received). Why doesn't Gate1 send email with a “read receipt” to verify that the email message was delivered and opened (which would solve a lot of problems)? We've asked that the original message be sent, but apparently it doesn't exist. Gate1 can't tell us when it was delivered. Gate1 always adds to / subtracts from the cost of a trip without an explanation. This happened for our trip to Greece and now to Japan. I should be able to log into my Gate1 account (at any time) and lookup when and why the trip price changed, but that is not available. It is as though the price of a trip is a moving target. Also, Gate1 should send its customers an email message, indicating that the price of a trip is increasing or decreasing and the reason for the change, but that never happens either. I have tried working this out with a gate1 representative, but she hasn't responded to the two email messages (starting on 1/9/23) I sent her or the two voice-mail message I left her.
