We just completed a Viking River Cruise, supposedly known for good tours, but Dave's Secret food tour was the best experience of our whole trip. Between the small family restaurants, beer school, desert explosion, all interspersed with Munich food history, it was awesome! We even learned how and why we have the term "Honeymoon" today all the way from the middle ages ( Take Dave's tour to find out!!!)

I really wanted to love this food tour, but unfortunately it wasn’t quite what I expected. Our tour guide was very nice and friendly, but I would have liked to hear more about his background or experience in the culinary world and more explanation about the foods we were trying and their significance in Bavarian cuisine. He also spoke very quickly and rather quietly at times, which made some of the information difficult to follow. The food itself was probably my biggest disappointment. The description advertises 10+ Bavarian foods, but it really did not feel like we tried anywhere near that many different items. My favorite was the fried bread-type dish, which was delicious, but overall I wasn’t particularly impressed with the food selections. I also wasn’t a fan of the family-style setup. At one stop, large platters of meats and cheeses were placed in the middle of the table for everyone to share, with toothpicks being used to take pieces. I noticed people reusing toothpicks, which made me uncomfortable. For a paid food tour, I would much rather have each guest receive a small individual portion of each item. Besides being more sanitary, it would allow everyone to actually try each food at their own pace. The tour also felt surprisingly inflexible. I don’t drink beer, and when beer was included at one of the stops, I asked if I could have a glass of wine instead and was told no. I wasn’t asking for anything extravagant—just a simple substitute for something I wasn’t going to drink. For a food and drink experience, I expected a little more flexibility. Overall, the guide was kind and there were a few things I enjoyed, but for the price and based on the description of the tour, I expected more variety, more individual tastings, more information about the food, and a more accommodating experience. Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of the highlights of our time in Munich.
