Sunday morning was the best time. We watched the sunrise, heard a Native Hawaiian chant to welcome the sun. Got to bike the 29 switchbacks twice, and then vanned to Makawao for breakfast, followed by an additional ride from Makawoa to Paia to their offices. 18 miles of riding - mostly just coasting down the mountain and there was something almost meditative about the experience. I would totally go again. They had a lead van and a chase van for coverage and they also had a guide who would stay with a group that needed to go slow and be extremely cautious. They allowed self - guided which meant you could go at your speed ahead of the guided riders. They also had the vans that if it was too much, you could stop, load your bike and ride the van the rest of the time. A wonderful experience with safety conscience group. Sunday morning is the best time - no other bike tour groups and you have the road to yourself coming down.
Aloha Shawn We greatly appreciate you sharing your experience with us. You gave great detail into our operations and helps reviewers to understand the tour better. We are happy you had the best time and look forward to seeing you again. Mahalo Maui Mountain Riders
The operator's equipment was worn. Back breaks barely worked. My helmet had not been cleaned since previous use, full of hair.
The early wake-up and cold temps are 100% worth the sunrise views! The bike down on cruisers is somewhat terrifying if you're a control freak, but super fun! Joe is hilarious!!
Aloha We appreciate the kind review. Yes Joe is hilarious. So glad your party had fun ! Mahalo
Stunning sunrise! The cold and the early morning were 100% worth it. Everett, our bus driver, was so kind and knowledgeable. The bike ride down was an added plus.
Mahalo for your review. Yes it has been COLD up there!!!
Started out being schooled for being early. Showed up 20 minutes early. Ended up at sunrise. We waited almost 2 1/2 hours. Didn’t need to get there that early. The staff was OK. The bike ride was a total disaster started with how we’re at our own risk we signed up for this And how people die on this not what I wanna hear before I go down the hill the operator ended up telling us that we go as fast as our way. Ended up putting my husband in front and had to break because the operator was too close and he merely touched. The middle line was put on a timeout in front of his whole family. By the way we did this for his 60th birthday as a bucket list. There were only the five of us he also kept telling my children and everybody they could go past him and go out on their own. They wanna go faster I must’ve told him six times we are going to stay together yet. He kept on going put my husband on a timeout back in the van. He never got back on a bike for me. I was told I was going too slow. If I didn’t go at least 30 mph they would get a ticket and I shouldn’t break the entire way down. It’s up for me on the terms by the way the speed limit and a lot of the places was 15 miles an hour. He told me I was going 15 to 20 but I needed to go 30 he made me very uncomfortable. This was an awful experience for $1500. I couldn’t give a zero but I would’ve for this gentleman he does not belong with people kept telling us how he cut his brakes on his bike and doesn’t use brakes. What an egomaniac.
Thank you for your review. We’re sorry to hear that this experience did not meet your expectations. Our check-in times, safety briefings, and ride procedures are clearly communicated in advance and are required for all participants. These processes are in place to ensure tours operate safely, on schedule, and in compliance with local traffic and safety regulations. All riders are required to attend a safety orientation and sign waivers acknowledging the inherent risks of this activity. During the ride, guides are responsible for managing spacing, speed, and group dynamics to maintain safety for both riders and surrounding traffic. Instructions regarding pace or braking are provided solely for safety and operational reasons. Any pauses, separations, or adjustments made during the tour are standard safety measures and are never intended to embarrass or single out a guest. While guides may offer riders the option to proceed at different paces when appropriate, the guide’s authority during the tour is necessary to ensure group safety. Riders are not asked to go beyond their limitations in fact they are encouraged to know their own personal limitations. We take feedback seriously and will review the concerns raised. We stand by our safety standards and staff training, which are essential to the safe operation of our tours. Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Please see this recent review regarding the same guides. Joe and Nani were so awesome and kind. Safety was paramount and they were very understanding when my daughter was nervous and just starting the ride. They took the time to speak with her and make sure she was comfortable. And on the other end of the spectrum, they also ensured that my son was able to ride down the hill at his own pace with no limitations since he is a more avid rider. Coolest part, getting to do the ride twice! Highly recommend!
We did the stargazing and sunrise plus biking with Maui Mountain Riders this AM. Definitely worth it. Loved that we were given fleece ponchos at the top even though being from CO we were prepared for the cold with hats, gloves and jackets. Standing up there watching stars for approx. an hour it did get brisk. Be prepared. Biking down from 6500 ft was so much fun and that we got to do the section 2x then a brief stop in town for a bite and a 5 mile bike ride back to their office was excellent adventure for this family of four. We only arrived from Denver yesterday and our 21 & 20 yr old were not exactly thrilled to get up at 2am to be at the office by 2:50am but the stargazing was fantastic, made it worth it. We had completely clear skies. Seeing Uranus, the Big Dipper and so many stars at 9.072 ft crater was excellent. The bikes do not have gears but you basically need to be comfortable riding the brakes or not. I know we topped out over 30mph at points. Charlotte our guide aided us on the first trip stopping a few times to make sure the group of 6 riders was comfortable. Then the 2nd trek we were cut loose. There are a few hair pin turns which need to be taken more cautiously but basically you can bomb down as long as you are safely in control and watching out for the random adorable cow and car on the descent. A great time was had by all of us. The chanting by native Hawaiians as the sun rose over the crater was so special prior to our ride down. I would do this again and recommend it to friends visiting Maui.
Aloha, Thank you for letting us know how your family enjoyed the tour. We can't wait to see again. Mahalo Maui Mountain Riders
When they say “Dress warm”, it’s no Joke. 37, feels like 29 is for real. The rest is a blast and it’s Maui, gets real warm after the sun is up. Mahalo from Colorado Brad, Joe and Noni.
Yes it can be very cold up there but warms up as you come down. Mahalo for taking the time to leave a review !!!
Fantastic does not describe this. It was way beyond fantastic. People, remember, you’re going almost to 10,000 feet. It will be cold and windy. Dress for winter! Being from Colorado and having done winter camping before, we were prepared. But …. So sorry for the warm weather friends that did not heed the prep advice. The tour company was beyond super. We passed other tour companies on our ride and, there was some disorganization and some challenges they were facing, and we just kept on riding. Our group size was smaller than the others and I couldn’t have been more thankful for that. Our two guides were knowledgeable and friendly and so easy to get along with. I wish I had more time because I would’ve taken them out to lunch and enjoyed an afternoon with them. They were just super people!! Because our group size was smaller, we had to join with another tour company to get up to the top of the mountain for the sunrise experience. I did not expect that and at first I was a little miffed or slightly disappointed. However, the proof is in The outstanding overall experience that we had.The other tour company guides and accommodations were great. I would not of wanted to do this trip any other way. Highly highly highly recommend this tour company!!!
Aloha, Mahalo nui loa for your incredible review! We’re thrilled to hear your experience was beyond fantastic and that you enjoyed your Haleakalā adventure with our team. You’re absolutely right — those early-morning summit temperatures can surprise people, so thank you for sharing that great reminder for future riders! We’re so glad you appreciated the smaller group size and our guides’ friendliness and expertise — we’ll be sure to pass along your kind words to them. We also appreciate your understanding about the shared sunrise transport; our partnership with Valley Isle Excursions truly creates a win–win experience for both our guests and companies. They’re an amazing team and offer the best Hana tours on Maui! It was our pleasure having you ride with us, and we hope to welcome you back for another Maui adventure soon. Warm aloha, The Maui Mountain Riders ‘Ohana 🌺🚴♂️
Sunrise was beautiful, Abe had great insite and told Hawaiian legends on the ride up. Heed the cold warning. Biking was a blast. We were allowed 40 minutes in town. Skip the breakfast, grab a pastry. Had we known the tour was almost over we could have explored the little shops.
Mahalo for your review! We're so glad you enjoyed the sunrise and that Abe's insights and Hawaiian legends added to the experience—it’s always special to start the day with a deeper connection to the island. Great tip about the cold weather; the summit can definitely be brisk! We appreciate your feedback about the town stop as well. We'll take that into consideration to help future guests make the most of their time. We hope the rest of your visit to Maui was just as memorable, and we'd love to have you ride with us again someday!
Fun trip! The trip up the mountain in the shuttle bus was cool. Alex the driver was a lot of fun with his Hawaiian stories. The sunrise was neat to see. The ride down was exhilarating! Very fast! The bikes could use a little T-L-C.
