This was such a lovely day! Morning was with guide Ian who was very knowledgeable about interesting facts all things LOTR and showing us all these cool filming locations was really amazing!! Loved the tour and highly recommend it to anyone who loves LOTR and nature. I really appreciated the story behind the Southern Trails business and it’s great to know that the people behind are folks who are really passionate about LOTR and NZ beauty. Good job guys, thanks so much for this great experience ☺️

Our guide was Eby. We had a fantastic day it was a great experience and he showed us all of the nice spots and also explained what they did there. It was an amazing experience with him I would do it again and we had a lovely time.

We had an absolutely fantastic experience on the Southern Trails Lord of the Rings Tour! It was easily one of the highlights of our time in New Zealand. Our guide, Eby, was wonderful — friendly, knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and genuinely fun to spend the day with. His knowledge of both the Lord of the Rings films and the incredible landscapes we visited made the experience so much more memorable. He did a great job bringing the filming locations to life, sharing behind-the-scenes stories and details while still giving us plenty of time to take everything in, explore, and get photos. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking, and getting to stand in places we recognized from the films was surreal. Even beyond being LOTR fans, we loved simply getting out into some of the most beautiful landscapes around Queenstown and Glenorchy. The half day felt relaxed, personal, and never rushed. Eby really made the experience special, and you could tell he genuinely cared about making sure everyone had a great time. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan visiting Queenstown, we can’t recommend Southern Trails enough. And if you get Eby as your guide, you’re in excellent hands. Thank you for such an unforgettable day in Middle-earth! Ps: tour was booked through PureGlenorchy who operated the first half of the tour, and Southern Trails did the second half.

Very much enjoyed this tour! Both of our guides Eby and Tristan are very funny and knowledgable, taking care of us to make our experience enjoyable despite the rain. Would love to take a picture at the exact same spot where Sam and Frodo once couched, but alas! A nice combo of drive and walk, we managed to stay relatively dry thanks to the guides' expert arrangements. As a LOTR fan, I'm super jealous of their job, to be honest!

Wonderful morning with Eby! It was great learning and seeing all of the locations and behind-the-scene of Lord of the Rings! Eby was so knowledgeable and fun to be with the entire time. My family thoroughly enjoyed it!

This tour was fantastic. The tour guide, Benji, was especially knowledgeable, fun and engaging, keeping all of us very entertained. As our group was only 4 people we were able to have a lot of fun and get to know each other by the end of the tour. I especially loved the trivia quizzes throughout the tour! We were also able to dress up in different costumes, with movie replica swords and equipment, to take plenty of photos!

We joined the full-day tour on 21 August 2026, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. We experienced some truly incredible scenery, learned so many funny and fascinating stories about the dedication that went into making the films, and for an entire day it genuinely felt as though we had stepped into Middle-earth. Even now, my husband doesn’t want to accept that the day is already over. :D A huge thank you to Benji and Dan, our guides, whose enthusiasm for and deep knowledge of this world made the whole experience incredibly vivid and memorable. <3 In the morning, we were led by Benji, who led two of us and told us that as long as there are at least two guests, the tour will still go ahead, which we really appreciated. At our very first stop, he gave us Elven cloaks to wear — and we ended up keeping them on for the entire morning. While walking through Arrowtown, some locals even spotted us and called us Hobbits! Along the way, he gave us lots of quizzes, all connected to The Lord of the Rings story, behind-the-scenes filmmaking, or real local history. If we couldn’t answer, he would patiently give us clues first before revealing the answer and telling us the fascinating story behind it. We absolutely loved this kind of interaction :D At every filming location, Benji enthusiastically brought out movie props for us to use. He also knew exactly how to frame the photos and helped us recreate scenes that had been filmed at those locations. What impressed us even more was that he could quote lines related to the locations from memory at any moment — including lines in Elvish! The afternoon followed a more popular route, so this time the vehicle was full. In my opinion, this route is also one of the most beautiful drives in New Zealand. Our afternoon guide, Dan, was equally professional and shared so many interesting stories both from the films and behind the scenes. He also told us about other movies that had been filmed at some of the locations we visited. Towards the end of the tour, Dan brought out another collection of movie props for everyone to take photos with. The props in the morning and afternoon were not exactly the same, so we got to take even more photos with completely different ones! On the drive back, Dan played The Lord of the Rings soundtrack, which was the perfect ending to the day and made us unexpectedly emotional. Lastly, If you’ve made it all the way to the end of this review, I think it’s safe to say that these two incredibly charismatic guides have already won you over — so come to Queenstown and join the adventure for yourself!!! Have fun!!!

We started this tour with Benji who was a wonderful tour guide! The effort he’s put in to be knowledgeable about the film locations and lord of the rings overall was obvious. His style involved lots of trivia questions about lord of the rings which we found fun and engaging! The second part of our tour was with Amy who was similarly knowledgeable. Both of them helped with photo opportunities and had extensive swords, capes, and props for photos! This was a great way to see some beautiful locations even if you’re not a huge lotr fan. But I wouldn’t want to miss it if I was!

Great tour for lord of the rings fans! I would suggest the fun day trip if you want to see the most filming locations. The guides, Benji and Amy, were knowledgeable and allowed a lot of time for pictures and questions. Taking pictures with the props was really fun! I learned so many new things.
