I decided to go to Sumatra after watching President Obama talk about the orangutans in a National Parks program. I understood that actually seeing one in their natural habitat was like winning the lottery, but I was very inspired to see these gifts of nature. When I signed up for the tour, the owner, Suria, was exceptionally kind, friendly, and responsive to my text messages. After several exchanges, I truly wanted to meet her. I had originally signed up for the 3 day, 2 night jungle trek, but needed to cancel because the airlines had lost my backpack and I didn’t get it back until day 10. As such, I settled on a 1 day jungle trek excursion. When I arrived at the place where my adventure would begin, I was immediately greeted by a friendly woman named, Geo. Then, she introduced me to our guide, Andy. Andy was very knowledgeable about this trek and said that there was a 96% chance that we would see an orangutan. I immediately got excited. Later, I found out that he was from the area and that he learned a lot from his grandfather. We connected instantly because he was personable and humorous. Dedy, a fellow guide of Andy, also went with us and he would be responsible for taking me back when the day ended. We also instantly connected because he also was personable and often pointed out things that I missed. Our first sighting of an orangutan was way up in the trees and you needed to really pay attention to see the female reaching for leaves to eat. After awhile, Andy said that we were leaving to go to another place. This other place is where we were able to see a much better view of another female orangutan and I instantly began to cry and marvel in this beautiful creature. Seeing two female orangutans was so fulfilling, but the magic didn’t stop. Andy took us to another location where there was a male orangutan actually on the jungle floor. Andy said that it is rare to see a male orangutan and when we did, I cried again and thought that this place is truly magical. I turned to Andy and said, the probability of seeing an orangutan with you as a guide went up to 99.9%! We even got to hear the male orangutan make mating call sounds to a nearby female and it was wonderful! The snacks and lunch that the company provided were perfect. The snack consisted of various fruits that helped us hydrate as it was so humid, many of us were sweating profusely. And lunch was was even better as it had a piece of fried chicken, my favorite food! After lunch, it was time for me to depart from the rest of the group, so Dedy and I left. I had forgotten about how we were going to get back, but was quickly reminded when Dedy took me to the bank of a river and told me to go swimming, so I did. The water was so refreshing after sweating all day. Then, when I had enough, Dedy and Arif took me on a rafting trip down the river to my starting point. What an incredible way to end one of the most exciting and magical adventures I’ve ever experienced. I will always be greatful and blessed…peace 🙏🏽 Draven
