Cai Rang Floating Market was one of our favourite experiences in the Mekong. Sharing breakfast and coffee on the river, watching local traders move between boats and discovering the quieter waterways gave us a beautiful glimpse into everyday life here.
Our guide May was wonderful: warm, knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about her home. She made the morning feel personal rather than like a tour. We highly recommend Mekong Realism company to anyone wanting to experience the Mekong beyond the usual tourist trail.

Don't go the commodity is you , and after that experience you want to vomit
THE FAMOUS FLOATING MARKET AT CAI RANG CAN THO VIETNAM
If you know what's good for you – DON'T GO TO THIS PLACE.
It is a TOURIST TRAP.
We got up very early, around 5 o’clock in the morning, excited to see the famous Cai Rang Floating Market near Can Tho in Vietnam. According to every travel guide and blog, this is supposed to be one of the most authentic experiences in the Mekong Delta – small boats trading fruits and goods between locals on the river.
When we arrived, the disappointment was huge.
About 90% of the boats were full of tourists, not locals. Instead of a real floating market where people trade between boats, you are taken – like every other tourist – to a few floating stalls. They make you get off the boat so you can buy junk and souvenirs.
Things you can easily buy near your hotel without waking up before sunrise and paying money for a tourist tour.
Everybody comes expecting to see a real local floating market – small boats with local people selling whatever they have, trading with each other on the river.
Maybe it was like that many years ago.
Today they don’t trade with each other.
They trade with us.
The truth is simple: you and me are the product.
We are the ones waking up early, paying for the tour, floating between dozens of tourist boats, buying things we don’t need.
What used to be a real market has slowly turned into a staged attraction for visitors.
When you look around, you see boats full of tourists taking pictures… of other boats full of tourists doing exactly the same thing.
The famous floating market may still exist in name, but the authenticity is long gone.
What you get today is mostly a tourist experience that makes you want to vomit.

No longer authentic floating market
We were very excited to see this market. We visited one (smaller one) near Bangkok and it was lots of fun. Based on the past pictures this market was great, but it is no longer the case. There is very few boats doing real "trading". Vast majority of the boats are actually tour boats or boats trying to sell something to tourist. Now it is just a tourist trap. Our tour guide did a great job to make this a valuable experience by explaining local customs of the past, so if you are interesting in learning about the past I would give it 4 stars (one star subtracted for garbage floating on the river). But if you are looking for authentic floating marker, like we did, this one is not for you.

Cai Rang Floating Market
I visited the Cai Rang Floating Market using services from Sunday Go. They provided a tour guide, Celina, who was on time, positive, knowledgable, and personable. She made the experience brilliant. We started the tour at 5:30am to catch the sunrise, but unfortunately the weather didn’t allow us to fully experience that part. The Cai Rang market itself was okay—interesting, but not something exceptional. The water is quite dirty and there is noticeable trash in some areas. However, we also explored several gardens and farms along the way, which were both informative and visually beautiful. Even though the weather was overcast, I still think it’s an important cultural experience when visiting Vietnam.

To do once.Tourist tour
It's a trick to do but it's really mass tourism.
When you like local produce especially some fruit served on the boat

A fantastic round trip from Ho Chi Minh City down to the Mekong Delta and back.
Great round trip with guide Daniel - the experiences were in line. We've been to a fish farm, seen everything a coconut can make. Several great routers in the Mekong River and been on floating market. Can really be recommended. Great hotels along the way too. Safe driver on the road.

Don't bother unless you've just arrived in Vietnam and want a river trip
Morning visit to the floating market from our lovely Mekong Cruise was not worth the bother
More tourist boats than local boats

I would recommend this experience
We had a good trip through the Mekong Delta and our guide Naomi was a great host. There was a bit to much walking as I have bad knees.

Good to see crafts but not everything is interesting.C is a sightseeing tour.
Stay organized and set to visit the maximum things.
Read the program well and ask to have a French-speaking guide or if you speak and understand English enough.
There are things to see, pagoda, floating market ,delta of the mekong and its crafts. but sometimes they offer uninteresting places (purple house paying extra, a park at Can tho.the yellow house idem).Meals are included but not exceptional.Buy the crafts at this place, you will not find them elsewhere. If you can, check with the agencies to privatize the trip.

Not sure why all rave reviews?
Not sure why all the tour books and reviewers raved about this wholesale floating market. My boat left the pier at 5:30 am and reached the market at about 6:10 am. Instead of 250 to 500 boats, there were as best 30 to 40 boats. And there were very few retail boats buying from the wholesalers. I think tour boats outnumbered the market boats by at least 2 to 3 times. There were small boats selling breakfast, drinks, and fruits to the tourist boats. The tour also stopped at three tourist traps before returning.
I think modern day infrastructure for transportation has made these floating markets dinosaurs.
