We booked a three-hour evening walking tour of Gion in Kyoto, led by a local guide, during which we wanted to explore the historic geisha districts, the traditional architecture and the hidden alleyways. Our local guide was Joseph Haydn (originally from Colombia and apparently of German-Austrian descent – or how else would you explain a name after the famous composer?). Our scepticism (how could Joseph, as an expat, really teach us about Japanese culture and history?) vanished after just a few sentences: Joseph, who has been living in Japan for over 10 years and has also started a family here, led us through Kyoto’s Gion district in the evening, pointing out specific landmarks and telling very vivid and interesting stories about them. The whole experience was both educational and engaging, never boring or dry. Joseph is truly brilliant and has brought Japanese culture and history to life. The tour lasts three hours and covers the history of Kabuki theatre, as well as the past and present, training and daily lives of the maiko and geisha. Joseph often points out relevant display boards that vividly illustrate his stories. The tour concludes with a stop at a café for a drink and an egg-based dessert. The roasted Hōjicha tea is highly recommended here.

A great experice! Our guide Jasmine gave us a comprehensive and interesting tour around Gion/Geisha district. The pacing was good and we were able to see alot but also take in the views and enjoy the evening atmosphere. 10/10 would do it again.
