This tour was so good. Our guide Elana was passionate about her country and very knowledgeable. I don't think there could be a better walking tour experience. It gave me an appreciation for Romania and I will be interested to see how the country moves forward in the future.

Elena was fantastic really enjoyed learning about the important history of communism in Romania. She explained all the significant details about all the buildings and monuments. She spoke very well and held the interest of everyone. Highly recommend Elena has a guide.

This 3.5 hour historic walking tour of Bucharest and communism was excellent. We met at the Patrichal Cathedral and ended at a memorial. Our guide was Elena and she was truly fantastic and made this one of the best tours I’ve been on - a very informative and also entertaining/humorous guide. She gave it a personal touch with family stories and sharing her experience of growing up. This is a must do tour for anyone visiting Bucharest.

An engaging walking tour geared toward western audiences with little knowledge of post-war Eastern bloc dynamics. Born into the 1980s, and with a background in puppeteering, the guide gives a compelling personal account of hardships experienced during the last gasp of the Ceausescau era. The tour proceeds with playful humour and anecdote. Light on intellectual rigour, the historical retelling is spotted with conceptual inconsistencies. While the delivery is engaging, the account acts as an ideological overcorrection, flattening complexities of Soviet power and policy. The tour readily offers up communism’s litany of failings, but brushes easily over what is nonetheless acknowledged as a period of progress and stability. At the same time, Romania’s fascist past is left conveniently oblique. The tour elides the nation’s independent incubation of the Iron Guard and subsequent close-knit Nazi ties which ended only with the Red Army’s encroachment. Those already subscribed to a western narrative of Cold War politics will likely come away satisfied but with their worldview unchallenged.
