This activity requires a moderate level of fitness and flexibility, as it involves walking through water over rocky terrain and exploring a cave, which includes some light rock climbing. The trip also includes an exhilarating rafting experience on the Río Claro, which makes it even more adventurous. Despite the physical challenge, it’s incredibly fun—truly unforgettable. I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything. Some tips for future participants: wear water shoes or sneaker with good grip; bring a dry bag or waterproof pouch for valuables, especially your phone or camera; wear lightweight, quick-drying clothing—you’ll get completely soaked; bring a change of clothes for after the adventure, there is space available to change and even take a shower if you'd like to; bring a small torch or headlamp for the cave section—it’s pitch black inside. Shoes and pouches for your phone are available for sale at the starting point. Be prepared to get out of your comfort zone—especially in the cave—but trust the guides; they’re excellent and make sure everyone feels safe.
I went as a solo traveler speaking a little Spanish. This tour is legit. We started off early at 420 am from El Poblado park in a tour bus with ~40 people. At first, the tour is Spanish only. We stopped at a roadside restaurant for breakfast then arrived at a hotel that partners with the rafting company, around 3-4 hours after departure (8-9 in the morning). Here, the ones that are rafting/adventuring broke off from the tour bus (I’m not sure where the rest of the bus went). We changed clothes at the hotel and stored our things in a locked hotel room. The hotel will sell you a waterproof case bag thing for your phone, and also water shoes (crocs) if you need them for 20 mil each. Everyone took just their bathing suit, shirts, water shoes, and waterproof phone thing with them, plus cash in the waterproof thing. From this point you will be away for 6 hours, but there is a little tienda in the middle to buy lunch snacks and beverages. We left this hotel and went to the rafting rendezvous. There were about 30 people total across 4 rafts with this one company (10 from this particular tour I’m reviewing). One of the guides, Johnny, speaks English which is a huge relief. I also had other English speakers from Caracao in my raft and they were real fun. Shoutout to them. The river is safe, warm, and beautiful. We rafted for a bit and it is Class 1- very easy. We also swam alongside the raft and stopped a few places to jump off trees and adventure. Then we got to a little beach for lunch snacks. After that we floated in the river no raft for 20 mins to the hike spot. Then we hiked up a small river to the cavern for 45 mins. I highly recommend bringing your own waterproof shoes with grip and a rock plate for this (I brought trail running shoes). The cavern is awesome. Completely pitch black with bats and owls that make screeching sounds. Out of this world. The guides gave everyone a flashlight. Totally safe and fun. We hiked through the cavern for 30 mins, then back to the road for 30 more mins where we were picked up and went back to hotel. We had lunch there and you can also buy ice cream and beers. Then the original bus picked us up around 430pm and we drove to Medellin. Traffic was bad that day and we got back at 11. Amazing tour. Way more fun than Gautape and I can’t believe it was only $65 in July 2023. Be sure to tip your raft guide well.
I've been traveling Colombia for 6 weeks and we've done tons and tons of tours. This rafting tour was absolutely the best tour we did. I went with my 6 year old daughter and we had a blast. We had breakfast and lunch including, plus the bus ride. Only down side was the long bus ride but it was so beautiful seeing the countryside of Colombia. The was was super comfortable. We went water rafting with the most amazing people and crew. Jonny and Sebastian were so helpful and kind. It was so beautiful rafting down the river ,then we walked up this magical river to a cave. The cave was out of this world with these oil birds who make these funny noises. Guatape was lame compared to this tour.
