Guided. Tour at Ostia Antica. So glad I booked this tour. I’d thought about looking around myself with an audio guide. This site is enormous and it would be hard to navigate yourself - you would miss the gems. Our guide Joan was brilliant with both knowledge and managing the group.
Had a really wonderful tour with Joan at the beginning of September 2026. Another reviewer - clearly from our tour - mentioned three smaller kids that were brought on the tour. They were a bit noisy at times but for us, enhanced the experience. Parents did a good job trying to corral them though this is probably not the ideal tour for them. We were sad when they peeled off early for the cafe. For his part Joan was incredibly knowledgeable and a great tour guide. We went on 6-7 more tours/excursions on our Mediterranean trip and this might've been our favorite. Highly recommend and some of the best-excavated sites you'll find. We were unable to access the museum after the tour for some reason - all doors closed and locked with no signage - and weren't warned to that effect beforehand. Minor gripe.
Joan was a fantastic guide. He was extremely knowledgeable, easy to understand, and gave us an entertaining and educational tour. This was notwithstanding the fact that one couple had brought 3 preschool kids who were (completely understandably and predictably) not at all interested in historical lectures and a lot of walking on a 90 degree day. To his credit he provided the information and led the tour as if the group included only adults, although several of us found it hard to hear or concentrate at times due to the kids/parent interactions. Note: I would not recommend this tour for smaller children, especially in blazing heat. It s a long tour and we really enjoyed it. Ostia was wonderful and we stayed after the tour to continue exploring a bit at this impressive site.
Ostia Antica provides a great illustration of ancient Roman life, and it is impressive how much is preserved. Tour guide Joan from E&D Tours was friendly and very knowledgeable. Note, the 4+hr time frame does not include whether you stay at site to visit the museum or cafe, or continue wandering. Yravel back is also on one’s own.
Great in-depth dive into this historical city port. Very well preserved mosaics and structures. Our guide Joan (pronounced Jo- on) was so knowledgeable and informative. This is a wonderful way to see something a little different than your standard Rome attractions.
