The operator provides detailed instructions with pictures making on where to go and what to expect and results in a no hassle, skip the line tour to the top of the dome. Halfway up, you go inside the dome and are able to walk the entire inner circumference giving a 360’ view of the basilica from 70m up. Then it’s up to the very top where you get a magnificent view of not only St Peter’s Square below, but a 360’ view of all of Rome. Once back at ground level, the tour puts you right into the basilica for a self-paced audio tour. Be prepared for a lot of steps even if you opt for the elevator option. Highly recommended

Climbing St. Peter’s dome was a trip highlight! The elevator handles most of the climb. The reward is a jaw-dropping 360° view over Rome’s rooftops, the Vatican gardens, and St. Peter’s Square — photos don’t do it justice. Inside, the basilica’s artistry (hello, Michelangelo’s Pietà!) is awe-inspiring. Booking with viator meant skipping the line entirely. Also the local provider was extremely helpful. Thanks to sincevatican also. Highly recommend — just wear comfy shoes!
