I've done a number of crafty things on my travels, but making leather shoes in Japan? I was intrigued! Booking a class was super easy with the online google form and Rio is super responsive, both via email and DMs. With lots of different styles to choose from (and bags too), I decided on a fisherman style sandal. While I didn't cut the leather, you really do make the entirety of the shoes, from beginning to end. I found the stitching while aligning the pieces to be the hardest part, but you start to get into a rhythm. It took me about 6 hours (including a lunch break) to complete the shoes, I imagine if you choose a pair with less stitching, it could be a shorter class. Rio is a kind and patient teacher and helps troubleshoot if something goes awry. He also has great lunch recs and plays the best playlist to add to the experience and keep the vibes upbeat. It's hard to imagine that a couple of pieces of leather can turn into shoes but I was blown away with how they came together and they fit like a dream. You will walk away with a deep appreciation for hand made shoes and the work that goes into making them. I added the vibram sole for both height, comfort, and grip. I wear them at work and I get comments all the time! I booked months in advance of my trip, spots fill up quickly, so if you're hesitating - don't! It was a wonderful experience and you WILL walk away with a beautiful pair of me-made shoes. Thank you again, Rio!
